Have you seen that music video ?We Are Hungry?? It isn?t a famine-relief fundraiser featuring well-meaning pop stars. It?s a musical complaint about the new, reduced-calorie public school lunch size made by students at Wallace County High School, in Sharon Springs, Kan. The video, set to the tune of Fun?s hit song ?We Are Young,? has been viewed more than 500,000 times on YouTube.
The new rules, passed by Congress in 2010 to fight childhood obesity and promote health, took effect in August. High school cafeterias must serve twice as many fruits and vegetables as before, limit proteins and carbohydrates, and serve lunches containing 750 to 850 calories.
For an average high schooler, that means two baked fish nuggets, a cup of vegetables, half a cup of mashed potatoes, one whole-grain roll, and eight ounces of fat-free milk.
?850 calories is plenty for lunch and ought to tide a teenager over until after school,? Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, told ABC News.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grade Teacher?
My career as an Instructional Designer (ID) has been heavily influenced by the field of Curriculum Design and Development. What is curriculum design and how is it different from instructional design? Curriculum design is essentially the practice of designing lessons for students. The term is most commonly used when describing K-12 education. Teachers may cover up to seven different lessons in a day with students. Each of those lessons is an instructional activity to be designed.
While many design concepts are present in both instructional design and curriculum development, they are typically labeled with different vocabulary. For example, the controversial concept of learning styles debated in instructional design might be discussed among the teaching community as multiple intelligences or differentiation of instruction. While many curriculum development concepts have influenced my own ID, there are four primary practices that have inspired me the most: protocols, illustrations, professional learning communities, and artifacts.
Protocols
I was introduced to protocols in my job at the All Kinds of Minds Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving teachers strategies to reach all of the students in their classroom. There, the National School Reform Faculty Protocols served as inspiration for both staff activities and instructor led training. The constructivist-inspired protocols they publish provide instructions for how to facilitate transformative small group activities. ?A protocol consists of agreed upon guidelines for a conversation,? states NSRF (www.nsrfharmony.org). NSRF has published dozens of protocols that deepen thinking, solve problems, push an issue or examine student work. The protocols are tested, and they work.
When I design instructor-led training, I often reference a book called ?The Power of Protocols: An Educator?s Guide to Better Practice?. It contains two dozen protocols. Each protocol includes the purpose, details, steps, facilitation tips and variations. Particular favorite protocols of mine include the ?Rich Text? Protocol, and ?Marvin?s Model?. Protocols are an incredible tool for facilitating social learning conversations.

Dan Roam?s book, ?The Back of the Napkin? tells us that 75% of the sensory part of the brain is dedicated to the sense of sight while the other 25% is shared among smell, touch, taste and hearing. Biologically, we are all visual learners. K-12 teachers ask students to draw on a regular basis to develop critical thinking skills. A group that we?re currently working with?Thinking Maps, Inc., based in Cary, NC, has been training teachers for many years on how to use eight core learning maps with students. In this model, students draw the various maps, like circle maps, tree maps and flow maps, to help them brainstorm, define, sort, describe, compare and contrast, classify and more. Research on academic achievement shows that illustrating vocabulary terms contributes greatly to comprehension and retention.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
Professional learning communities are small groups of teachers and administrators who assemble on a regular basis to examine student work and push their own practice. PLCs have also been referred to as ?communities of continuous inquiry and improvement?1. PLCs are ongoing, reflective, collaborative, supportive, and focused on outcomes. Many schools post PLC norms and meeting templates on the Web. Consider implementing professional learning communities to support the transfer of skills into practice following a formal training program.
Artifacts
Corporate America is largely a testing culture. We like to know what each learner scored on an assessment at the end of a course or module. In addition, organizations might have a formal supervisor or mentor observation plan or other operational performance metrics. In the field of education, teachers are asked to produce artifacts from the classroom to show how they are implementing the Common Core Curriculum standards. These could include lesson plans and student work samples. New material, graphene, may soon replace silicon for technology industry, experts say

The method involves growing semiconductor-nanowires on graphene. To achieve this, researchers "bomb" the graphene surface with gallium atoms and arsenic molecules, thereby creating a network of minute nanowires.
The result is a one-micrometre thick hybrid material which acts as a semiconductor. By comparison, the silicon semiconductors in use today are several hundred times thicker. The semiconductors' ability to conduct electricity may be affected by temperature, light or the addition of other atoms.

"Given that it's possible to make semiconductors out of graphene instead of silicon, we can make semiconductor components that are both cheaper and more effective than the ones currently on the market," explains Helge Weman of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Dr Weman is behind the breakthrough discovery along with Professor Bj?rn-Ove Fimland.
"A material comprising a pliable base that is also transparent opens up a world of opportunities, one we have barely touched the surface of," says Dr Weman. "This may bring about a revolution in the production of solar cells and LED components. Windows in traditional houses could double as solar panels or a TV screen. Mobile phone screens could be wrapped around the wrist like a watch. In short, the potential is tremendous."
The researchers have received assistance in gaining patents and founding a company from NTNU Technology Transfer AS, a collaborative partner to the programme entitled Commercialising R&D Results (FORNY2020) at the Research Council of Norway.
However, the path to these findings started with basic research funded under the Research Council's Clean Energy for the Future Programme (RENERGI) and the now-concluded programme, Nanotechnology and New Materials (NANOMAT), which initiated the findings.
The researchers will now begin to create prototypes directed towards specific areas of application. They have been in contact with giants in the electronics industry such as Samsung and IBM. "There is tremendous interest in producing semiconductors out of graphene, so it shouldn't be difficult to find collaborative partners," Dr Weman adds.
The researchers are hoping to have the new semiconductor hybrid materials on the commercial market in roughly five years.

Assange, who has been holed up in the?Ecuadorean Embassy?since June to avoid extradition, made the comments at a packed event on the sidelines of the?United Nations General Assembly.
Assange mocked Obama for defending free speech in the Arab world in an address to the?United Nations?on Tuesday, pointing to his own experience as evidence that Obama has "done more to criminalize free speech than any other US president."
"It must have come as a surprise to the Egyptian teenagers who washed American teargas out of their eyes (during the Arab Spring) to hear that the US supported change in the Middle East," Assange said.
"It's time for President Obama to keep his word ... and for the US to cease its persecution of WikiLeaks," he said.
Assange's combative comments, plus statements made by Ecuadorean Foreign Minister?Ricardo Patino?and his other allies at the event, suggested no solution is in sight to the diplomatic standoff surrounding the 41-year-old Australian.
British authorities have surrounded the?Ecuadorean Embassy?and said if Assange sets foot outside, they will arrest him and extradite him to?Sweden?to face rape and sexual assault allegations.
Assange's lawyers and?Ecuador's government?fear that could lead in turn to extradition to the?United States, where they say he would face "inhumane" prison conditions and even the death penalty.
Assange, who looked to be in good health as he sat at a desk in front of a bookshelf and addressed the 150 or so people at the event, said Britain and?Sweden?have so far refused to provide guarantees he would not be extradited to the United States.
US and?European government?sources have countered that the?United States?has issued no criminal charges or launched any attempts to extradite Assange.
Patino is scheduled to meet with British Foreign Secretary?William Hague?in New York on Thursday to discuss Assange, and he said there are "multiple paths" that could lead out of the standoff. Yet, in an interview with Reuters following the U.N. event, Patino made clear that?Ecuador?is not willing to cede much ground.
"The ball's in their court right now," Patino said.
Patino held in his hands a mimeographed copy of an 1880 agreement signed between Britain and?Ecuador, which he said prohibits extradition in cases such as Assange's. He said he would show the document to Hague on Thursday.
Patino rigorously defended?Ecuador's decision to grant political asylum to Assange, expressing disbelief that Britain is "determined" to arrest the former computer hacker even though he said there are no criminal charges against him. "This means you have reason to suspect he's being persecuted," Patino said.
He said Assange is in relatively good spirits but expressed concern his physical and psychological condition could deteriorate.
"I think of myself, how I'd react in that situation, not being able to go outside, being isolated," Patino said. "It's practically like being jailed."

A Preschool Mathematics Lesson Plan - The Blue Lotus Education ...

I know that I only teach preschool, but even preschool teachers have to have lesson plans. I want my students to be prepared to take on Kindergarten full force. That means they need to learn the basics of every subject. Because of this, I?m preparing a mathematics lesson plan for the week. I will probably do this for the rest of the year as well. It?s never too early to begin teaching math concepts that build the foundation for higher level math down the road.

'Moon River' crooner Andy Williams dies at age 84
ST. LOUIS (AP) ? With a string of gold albums, a hit TV series and the signature "Moon River," Andy Williams was a voice of the 1960s, although not the '60s we usually hear about.
"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," the singer once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."
Williams' plaintive tenor, boyish features and wholesome, middle-America appeal helped him outlast many of the rock stars who had displaced him and such fellow crooners as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s, hosting hugely popular Christmas TV specials, and continued to perform in his 80s at the Moon River Theatre he built in Branson, Mo.
In November 2011, when Williams announced that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer, he vowed to return to performing the following year: His 75th in show business.
Williams died Tuesday night at his home in Branson following a yearlong battle with the disease, his Los Angeles-based publicist, Paul Shefrin, said Wednesday. He was 84.
He became a major star the same year as Elvis Presley, 1956, with the Sinatra-like swing "Canadian Sunset," and for a time he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."
But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style," and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had given up and (temporarily) retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records and three platinum, was nominated for five Grammy awards and hosted the Grammy ceremonies for several years.
Movie songs became a specialty, from "Love Story" and "Days of Wine and Roses" to "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.
The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the beloved 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.
"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir, titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."
"The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971, won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering casually with his guest stars.
It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act ? the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Their younger sibling Donny also made his debut on Williams' show, in 1963 when he was 6 years old. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.
Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.
Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.
"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines
His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude. In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said it was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.
Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.
He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927. In his memoir, Williams remembered himself as a shy boy who concealed his insecurity "behind a veneer of cheek and self-confidence." Of Wall Lake, Williams joked that it was so small, and had so little to do, that crowds would gather just to watch someone get a haircut.
Williams began performing with his older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.
When Andy was 8, Williams' father brought the kids for an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down, but Jay Emerson Williams and the young quartet kept returning and they were finally accepted, their show bringing them attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."
The brothers joined Bing Crosby in recording the hit "Swinging on a Star" in 1944 for Crosby's film "Going My Way," and Andy, barely a teenager, was picked to dub Lauren Bacall's voice on a song for the film "To Have and Have Not." His voice stayed in the film until the preview, when it was cut because it didn't sound like Bacall's.
Later the brothers worked with Kay Thompson of eventual "Eloise" fame, then a singer who had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas to a huge ovation. They drew rave reviews in New York, Los Angeles and across the nation, earning a peak of $25,000 a week.
Williams, analyzing their success, once said: "Somehow we managed to work up and sustain an almost unbearable pitch of speed and rhythm."
After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.
Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.
"I had no money for food, so I ate it," he recalled in 2001, "and it actually was damned good."
A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.
Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon, and, in 1968, was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign. When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.
"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."
After leaving TV, Williams headed back on the road, where his many Christmas shows and albums made him a huge draw during the holidays. One year in Des Moines, however, a snowstorm kept the customers away, and the band's equipment failed to reach Chicago in time for the next night's show, forcing the musicians to borrow instruments from a high school band.
"No more tours," Williams decreed.
He decided to settle in Branson, the self-proclaimed "live entertainment capital of the country," with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts.
When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music performers, but Williams changed that, building the classy, $13 million Andy Williams Moon River Theater in the heart of the city's entertainment district and performing two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he begin to cut back to one show a night.
Not surprisingly, his most popular time of the year was Christmas, although he acknowledged that not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest.
"The fact is most of my friends in L.A. still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.
He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.
Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."
Williams is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian.

Tesla unveils network of free, solar 'Superchargers' for Model S

Tesla Motors has answered critics of the range and energy source of electric cars by establishing a network of solar-powered charge stations throughout California, with plans to expand to the rest of the U.S. And if you have a Model S, charging is free forever.
For years it has been an oft-repeated objection to electric cars that while they may not themselves produce carbon emissions, their electricity often is produced by carbon-producing power plants. It's a legitimate problem, though for now unavoidable ? unless, as Tesla demonstrates, you circumvent the power grid altogether.
That's what they've decided to do with their Supercharger stations, a network of solar-powered chargers that will refill your Tesla Model S free of charge. And what's more, they charge at four or five times the rate of even a high-capacity home charger, so you can get 150 miles of range back in half an hour.?
The Superchargers aren't intended for everyday charging, but for long-distance driving: they're?spaced between 100 and 200 miles apart, distant but?well within the 250-mile range of the Model S. At the moment the network is limited to California, but Musk was confident that within two years, much of the U.S. (as well as some of Europe and Asia) will be covered:
As Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the announcement, "If you want to go from LA to New York, if you pack food and stay with friends, you can leave your wallet at home."
The other nice thing about these stations is that not only do they power themselves, but they're designed to collect more solar energy than they expend on charging vehicles. This extra energy they actually contribute to the grid, so they're a net positive, not a draw.
Tesla's Model S is their newest vehicle, aimed at commuters and families. At around?$50,000 to start, it competes with Lexus and BMW, not Honda and Subaru, but that hasn't stopped it from pre-selling thousands of units. They're only just this month starting to roll out to buyers, so there aren't many on the road just yet.
The Supercharger stations in and around Los Angeles and San Francisco are online?right now, and others will surely be announced by Tesla when they go live. More information can be found at Tesla's press release, and?Engadget has embedded a video of the event.

You have been a challenge from the get-go. I think we've all mellowed a bit with age.
I love your smile and your friendliness and how anywhere we go you are proud of your family and you are excited to be right in the thick of whatever action is whirring 'round. We go into a Target, you make two friends. At the park, you always invite others to play. You put yourself out there. I love that.
I just like you so much. And so does Daddy. We three have a good time, don't we? I like that we love books and board games and music and good food and spending time together. I love how you love ALL your family, just the same. Diggy and Papa and Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Dana and Uncle Jeff and all the cousins and even Bert the Dog, and me and Daddy, just. the. same. I love how the other day when you called to see if Henry could spend the night you left a message for Katherine and let slip at the end, "Love you...." Even though she is not technically in our family. Even though you might not take it back, but you aren't willing to engage with the fact of having said it. Having felt it.
Like with Mrs. Arms, your undisputed favorite teacher ever (except for Heather, your Christ Teacher, and mine, too) you wouldn't hug her forever but instead you'd give her a belly bump. She was a miracle for you. She really got you, in a way no other teacher had. I know she must be so proud of how much your handwriting has matured, to use your word. You have worked hard for it.
We enjoy you. Even when you are cranky or scared or angry or fretful or having a belly ache. We enjoy your love of vampires and Harry Potter, of Legos and backroads instead of interstates. We enjoy that you are still so snuggly every morning when you wake up, and that you run to us after school or anytime we've not seen you for a bit. We delight in watching you play soccer and tennis, and focus all your energies on neater handwriting and organization. It makes me laugh that there's a plastic action figure of Dr. Doom on top of my canister of Rosewood bath salts by the tub.
Last night after we read our Harry Potter chapter and Daddy fell asleep with you, I came in to get him. He and I crawled into bed and I told him, "What a wonderful boy we have been given." "Yes," he said. We are so thankful.
Remember your birthday last year? You were six. You and I had a picnic and cupcakes with Papa and Diggy when she was in Vanderbilt ICU. You were afraid of her IVs and the way she was hooked up to a catheter bag. Over the last year when she's been so sick and so far away from herself as you knew her before, you have been pretty amazing. You have hugged her and kissed her and told ?her about your life and prayed for her and spent a lot of time with Papa, too. I know you have brought them joy.
Thank you, my boy, for letting me be your mother, for being in this life with us -- this sweet sweet sweet little messy God filled life.

Samsung's flagship phone and chief?iPhone 5 competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S III, should be getting the latest version of Android, 4.1, and also known as Jelly Bean. Oddly, the first country where the update for the phone?will be available is Poland.
Samsung, locked in a fierce battle with Apple on many fronts, shipped the Galaxy S III with Android 4.0.?
The add-ons that 4.1 bring can only make the S III even more desirable for customers. It includes Google Now, which predicts what information you'll need and want before you even ask for it by learning your habits and interests; improved Google voice search; and a notification bar that can expand to show you a portion of your email inbox instead of just the number of emails waiting to take up your time.
In an email to The Verge, a?Samsung representative?said Jelly Bean will "gradually" be introduced to other markets, something that will "vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements."?
GigaOM noted that "it?s likely that Samsung is using (Poland) as a test for its update process," so American users need to remain patient.
Other phones?in line for the upgrade, according to Samsung, include?the?Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy Mini 2, and Galaxy S Duos.
The new?Samsung Galaxy Note II, a 5.5-inch-screen phone/tablet (termed by some as a "phablet"),?due out in the U.S. by mid-November, will also ship with Jelly Bean.
