Samsung Series 7 NP700Z5C-S02UB UEFI Bios and Windows 7

Hello-
From my previous thread, I had planned on removing the 5400 rpm 1tb HDD from my laptop and installing a Samsung 840 SSD.

That went well but I am running into an issue. This has the UEFI bios on it with the secure boot so I had to do a clean install of Win8. Win8 IS NOT FOR ME, hate it. So i want to put Win7 Pro on the unit.

Problem is when I go to boot the install CD I get an error because of the UEFI secure boot. When I review the settings under Seurity boot config, I have one option to factory reset the UEFI settings and one to over write it.

I select the second to over write it and the Win7 media boots but hangs when it says starting windows and the four colors come out.

So basically my question is how do I do a clean Windows 7 install on this unit?
Cheers
K

Boy's postcard mailed in 1967 turns up in Oklahoma

(AP) ? It may have taken 46 years, but one boy's postcard has made it home to Mom.

Bert Jacobson sent the postcard to his mother in Pauls Valley, Okla., in January 1967, when he was 13 years old. The card, from the Old Country Store Museum in Hereford, Penn., arrived last Friday.

Jacobson tells Tulsa television station KOTV (http://is.gd/5MzAmX ) that he traveled to the East Coast with his father and cousins to buy concrete trucks and mixing equipment for the family business.

The postcard was sent with a 4-cent Abraham Lincoln stamp. The card reads: "Mom, Hi. We've been having a great time."

Jacobson's sister, Marilyn Hubbard, says their mother wasn't surprised that her son sent a card ? only that it took 46 years to arrive.

Wall Street closes flat as market takes a breather

Stocks ended a quiet session with slight moves on Monday as investors found few reasons to keep pushing shares higher following a six-week advance, though the longer-term trend was still viewed as positive.

The benchmark index is up more 6.4 percent in 2013, putting both the S&P 500 and Dow industrials near multi-year highs. The S&P is less than 4 percent from its all-time intraday high of 1,576.09, hit in October 2007.

"This is still a market that looks terrific, but when you're up for six weeks in a row, everyone is going to want to take a pause going into the seventh week even if there is no bad news out there," said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management in Chicago.

Volume was light, with about 4.812 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, well below the daily average so far this year of about 6.48 billion shares.

Wall Street was modestly lower throughout the session but regained some ground in the final hour of trading as Google Inc rebounded off earlier losses. Shares of the Internet search giant dipped 0.4 percent to $782.42, recovering from earlier declines of 1 percent after the company said in a filing former chief executive Eric Schmidt is selling roughly 42 percent of his stake in the company.

Also in the tech space, Apple Inc rose up 1 percent to $479.93 after the New York Times reported the iPhone maker was experimenting with the design of a device similar to a wristwatch.

The Federal Reserve's Vice Chair Janet Yellen, seen as a potential successor to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke next year, said the Fed is still aggressively stimulating an anemic U.S. economic recovery that has failed to bring rapid progress on employment.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 21.81 points, or 0.16 percent, at 13,971.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.92 points, or 0.06 percent, at 1,517.01. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 1.87 points, or 0.06 percent, at 3,192.00.

Upbeat U.S. and Chinese data last week helped the S&P 500 extend its weekly winning streak to six. The index gained about 8 percent over that period.

Equities have been strong performers lately and many investors have used any declines in the market as opportunities to buy.

"Everyone wants to buy on a dip in this market, but if you're on the sidelines right now, the decline we're seeing today just isn't the kind you would jump in on," Kuby said.

President Barack Obama will describe his plan for spurring the economy in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. He is expected to offer proposals for investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy and education.

Opposition has grown to the $24.4 billion buyout of Dell Inc , the No. 3 personal computer maker, as three of the largest investors joined Southeastern Asset Management on Friday in raising objections. Dell said in a regulatory filing it had considered many strategic options before opting to go private in a buyout led by Chief Executive Michael Dell.

Dell shares hovered near $13.65, the buyout offer price.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc shares rose 2.7 percent at $170.35 after it said longtime drug development partner Sanofi plans to boost its stake.

Moody's Corp was one of the strongest percentage gainers on the S&P 500, rising 4.9 percent to $45.49. Last week the stock plunged 22 percent after the U.S. government launched a civil lawsuit against the company. The sell-off marked the stock's worst week since October 2008.

About 53 percent of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed lower while slightly more Nasdaq-listed stocks closed in negative territory.

Deep genomic analysis identifies a micro RNA opponent for ovarian cancer

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Researchers employed an extensive analysis of genomic information to identify a new, high-risk cohort of ovarian cancer patients, characterize their tumors, find a potential treatment and test it in mouse models of the disease.

The exhaustive analysis that led to micro RNA 506 (miR-506) as a potential therapeutic candidate for advanced or metastatic ovarian cancer is the cover article in the Feb. 11 edition of Cancer Cell.

"Functional analysis showed that miR-506 is a robust inhibitor of a cellular transition that makes ovarian cancer cells more resistant to treatment and likely to spread. We will continue to investigate this micro RNA as an inhibitor of ovarian cancer metastasis," said Wei Zhang, Ph.D. professor in MD Anderson's Department of Pathology and senior author of the paper.

Micro RNAs do not code for genes like their cousins, the messenger RNAs. They are capable of blocking a gene's activation by plugging up its promoter region or altering its protein after it's expressed.

Cell line experiments demonstrated that miR-506 blocks cancer cells by suppressing a protein crucial to transforming a cell from one type to another associated with cancer invasiveness, metastasis and shortened survival.

Analysis of human tumors showed higher miR-506 expression is associated with longer overall survival. Mice with two types of advanced ovarian cancer treated with miR-506 packaged in a fatty (liposomal) nanoparticle had fewer and smaller tumors than control mice.

"We next plan to test whether miR-506 sensitizes ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin (standard chemotherapy) in our mouse model," Zhang said.

The liposomal nanoparticles already have been shown to be safe for human use, said co-senior author Anil Sood, M.D., professor in MD Anderson's Departments of Gynecologic Oncology and Cancer Biology and the Center for RNAi and Non-Coding RNA. "After the additional combination experiments, we would need to do formal safety testing before moving it into clinical trials," Sood said.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic cancer in the United States, with an estimated 22,280 cases diagnosed in 2012 and 15,460 deaths. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and it also has greater capacity to spread than most other solid tumors.

New analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas data

Based on gene expression data from 489 high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma patients, TCGA's initial study published in Nature divided these patients into four categories but found no survival differences among the groups.

Zhang, who is co-director of a TCGA genomics center, and colleagues applied additional analyses to better understand the TCGA category of mesenchymal ovarian cancer. Most solid tumors are carcinomas, meaning that they start in the lining (epithelium) of the organ. Emerging evidence, Zhang noted, connects ovarian cancer cell invasiveness and spread to a loss of epithelial features and a gain of mesenchymal features, known as epithelial to mesenchymal transition.

There are a number of significant differences between the two types of cell. One is mobility: epithelial cells are designed to stay put and are likely to die in a variety of ways if they break away from the primary tumor. Mesenchymal cells can move about. They also rely on distinctive protein biomarkers.

The search narrows, from 2,942 genes to one miRNA

The researchers used additional data from the TCGA group -- alterations of gene copy number, miRNA expression and DNA methylation, which silences genes -- and re-analyzed the 489 patients.

"With those data, we were able to identify a subtype of ovarian cancer, look deeply into the mechanism behind it and identify regulators of that type so we can develop new treatments," said co-lead author Da Yang, Ph.D., an MD Anderson Odyssey Scholar in the pathology department.

Starting with 2,942 genes that TCGA identified as overexpressed in the mesenchymal group, they narrowed that list to 253 genes, 219 of which were associated with miRNA.

They found that the 219 miRNA-associated mesenchymal genes divided 455 ovarian cancer patients into two clusters:

  • 171 with high levels of miRNA expression, 169 of whom had high-grade disease, and shorter survival, classified as the mesenchymal subtype.
  • 284 with low levels of miRNA gene expression, longer survival and lower grade disease, classified as the epithelial subtype.

The team confirmed these results in three independent data sets totaling 560 ovarian cancer patients.

Nineteen miRNAs were identified, eight of which were predicted to control 89 percent of the 219 miRNA-associated genes. Of the eight, the least was known about miR-506, and it was least expressed in the mesencyhmal cases. "We decided to focus on miR-506," Zhang said.

miR-506 blocks mesenchymal, helps epithelial proteins

In a series of cell line experiments, the scientists forced overexpression of miR-506 and a control miRNA in ovarian cancer cells. Treated cells had much lower levels of two important mesenchymal markers and higher levels of E-cadherin, a protein vital to epithelial cells.

Additional experiments showed miR-506 specifically inhibited SNAI2, a mesenchymal-cell-promoting protein, by binding to the promoter region of its gene, blocking activation.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF?) induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal cell transition, and the team found that it was prominent in the mesenchymal type of ovarian cancer. In cancer cells treated with miR-506 and then treated with TGF?, the miRNA completely abolished TGF?'s effects.

In human tumors, more miR-506 tied to improved survival

Analysis of 92 ovarian cancer tumors from Tianjin Hospital in Tianjin, China, showed:

  • Tumors with low levels of miR-506 had mesenchymal traits, including high levels of SNAI2 and VIM, another mesenchymal biomarker, and low levels of E-cadherin.
  • Tumors with high levels of miR-506 had epithelial traits, including more E-cadherin, and less SNAI2 and VIM.
  • High miR-506 Tianjin patients had a median survival of 50 months, compared with 30 months for those with low levels.

These results were repeated in two separate data sets of 160 cases.

Zhang and colleagues treated mice with two ovarian cancer cell lines with either nanoparticle miR-506 or a control nanoparticle.

Mice treated with miR-506 not only had fewer (75 and 48 percent declines), smaller tumors (down 78 and 53 percent), they also had steeply reduced levels of SNAI2 and VIM and major boosts of E-cadherin (200 and 120 percent increases).

These results suggest liposomal nanoparticle-delivered miR-506 might be developed as an ovarian cancer treatment. While miRNA has been effective in lab experiments, delivery in liposomal nanoparticles has shown promise in research at MD Anderson and other institutions.

Longstanding collaborations with the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, and MD Anderson sister institution Tianjin Medical University are vital to this research, Zhang said.

Get em while they?re hot Miami! Giancarlo Stanton is about to set your city on fire!

This kind of puts White Sox home games in perspective. Yeah it?s not a good look to be one of only 7 teams not to crack 2 million in home attendance last year but 1,965,955 million is still a lot better than the fucking 4 spot that the Marlins are about to throw on the board in 2013. There legitimately might be a chance there?s a game this year attended by zero people this year. Just two teams on the field, and like 50 illegal immigrant Cubans in the stand selling hot dogs and Corona light to nobody. Guess it wasn?t a good idea to literally trade your entire team in the off-season.

ADELE: NO TIME TO BE COOL

Adele says she's been so busy singing nursery rhymes to her new baby son that "I don't really remember what's cool and what's not."

Still, she was cool enough to add another Grammy to last year's six-award sweep when she won Sunday night for pop vocal performance for "Set Fire to the Rain (Live)."

That may have to hold her for a while.

She's set to perform her Golden Globe-winning song from the James Bond film "Skyfall" at the Oscars in a couple weeks, and says she's been so busy she's had little time to work on her new album.

"I'm not very far along at all," Adele confessed backstage at the Grammy Awards. "I've been out of the loop really."

GRAMMYS DON'T WAIT FOR ANYONE

The Grammy Awards show started at 8 p.m. EST. Not at 8:05 or 8:07 or 8:10

The late-arriving celebrity crowd quickly learned that fact when they were kept in a vestibule with all the regular folks until the first commercial break. Only then were they allowed to take their seats.

That meant Drake, Jenna Jameson and Tito Ortiz had to cool their heels while Taylor Swift opened the show with her exuberant performance of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

The waiting continued as host LL Cool J greeted the audience and on through Ed Sheeran and Elton John's performance.

The stars' handlers did manage to move them to the front of the line that was waiting to get in.

Did Taylor Swift just launch World War III?

After Swift broke into a faux British accent during her Grammy-opening performance, several One Direction fans took to Twitter to voice their disdain at the apparent dig at one of the singer's former flames, One Direction member (and native Brit) Harry Styles.

The English-accented flourish came when Swift started speaking in the middle of an "Alice in Wonderland"-like performance of her Grammy-nominated song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

Reaction was swift.

"Did Taylor Swift just do an English accent?" director Judd Apatow tweeted immediately after it happened.

KIMBRA WAS THE CHARM

After Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" won the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance, he revealed that Kimbra wasn't his first, or even his second, choice for the song.

He had already gone through two female singers for the track and was waiting on another vocalist when "she called out."

"I built so much expectation with that vocalist that I was feeling a little crushed," he said backstage after collecting the Grammy.

It came down to Kimbra to sing on the song that was recorded in her apartment. It was last year's biggest hit.

As for the unnamed singer, Gotye said she makes wonderful music on her own and "shouldn't be mad."

Gotye also won the Grammy for best alternative music album for "Making Mirrors."

How to Choose Between SEO and PPC Advertising | Lakeshore ...

On February 9, 2013, aaron wrote:

The Internet has become an absolute necessity for modern businesses that are looking to expand their advertising reach. With a relatively small investment, any business can start reaching their target audience faster and more efficiently than ever before in human history. It is an exciting time in the business world, and the some of the most significant online territory has already been claimed. Sites like Amazon and eBay have already sunk their roots into the ground and are firmly established in their respective fields. Even these major players, though, are investing in search engine optimization and pay-per-click advertising. These are known by the savvy as SEO and PPC respectively.

?PPC vs. SEO: The Basics

There?s only a few simple factors that decide whether or not SEO and PPC are worthwhile investments for a business. SEO is typically considered ?free? traffic, but the reality is that it?s time-consuming, and professional businesses do charge for SEO services. On the other hand, PPC is usually considered ?paid? traffic, but effective PPC will make more money than it costs to maintain. While many businesses can benefit from both, there are times when either of the two may prove inefficient or ineffective, and with a little common sense, anyone can distinguish which of the two is right for their business.

Most small or medium-sized businesses will have the freedom to choose between the two, but they often lack the resources to simultaneously invest in both. This is because PPC requires a continual, upfront investment, while SEO requires continual effort over long periods of time. Both can be outsourced for a premium charge, and this is often the easiest way to go for fast results. Deciding which of the two to begin with should always be based on facts and costs, and these are fairly easy to ascertain.

There are a few primary factors that determine what course of action will be most effective. The first factor is understanding what keywords are likely to be the most beneficial to the company. If a company does nothing but sell chairs, it would be most interested in keyword searches such as ?chair,? ?buy chairs,? ?cheap chairs? and other similar phrases that a chair buyer would likely be typing into a search engines like Google or Bing. There are also longtail keywords that may be of relevance, such as ?buy chairs in Los Angeles? or ?Where can I find cheap chairs??

Understanding SEO

In regards to search engine optimization, the most important considerations are searches per month and competition. Major search engines all provide basic data on how many searches per month a keyword is receiving, and this data can be used to estimate how valuable the word is per month. If a keyword is receiving an estimated 7,000 searches per month, it?s commonly accepted that a majority of the searches will click on the first, second or third webpage listed. Many will still click on results further down on the keyword?s result page, also known as a search engine results page (SERP), but the most profitable position will most likely be the first position on the list.

This is where competition becomes a factor. If well-established sites are all occupying the first few positions, it will be impossible to overtake them quickly. This is because search engines favor authority sites with great reputations. However, if all the sites occupying the top slots are shoddy and unprofessional, they will be far easier to overtake.

Profitability in SEO is always based on the point where competition meets searches per month in a favorable way. When competition is low, the word is likely to be conquerable in four to sixteen weeks with minimal effort. When competition is high, it?s much more difficult to reach the first page without a substantial investment of both time and money. With that said, a business that has numerous keyword options that can all reliably bring natural traffic to their website should always invest in SEO.

Understanding PPC

Pay-per-click advertising is much easier to assess. As with SEO, a business must first find their keywords of choice that are likely to lead to potential customers. However, rather than spending the time to climb the proverbial SEO ladder, they only need to bid small increments for every person that clicks their advertisement. This is done via bids, meaning that everyone has a chance to bid on a specific keyword. If a keyword is likely to result in 100 unique clicks per day, the decision to invest will be easy to make. If a website?s conversion rate is one purchase per 100 unique viewers, then the cost of those 100 clicks must only be less expensive than the profit of one sale. If, for example, one sale is worth $30 in profit, 100 clicks must cost less than $30. Each website has its own unique needs, costs, and profits in regards to PPC, which is exactly why a unique approach is required for each business.

Both SEO and PPC are two of the most valuable tools for generating profit in the digital age. As such, it?s important for business to realize that doing both well will always be better than doing one or the other well. However, some markets are not friendly to new and emerging businesses that want to buy traffic via PPC. Some markets are completely saturated with SEO competition. The unique approach that must be taken for profit can be generalized, but the needs of every business across the various different fields that exist are going to vary drastically. This is one of the reasons outsourcing PPC and SEO to professional companies has become so popular. It isn?t always easy for a business to figure out exactly what they need to do for profit, but it?s almost certain that the profit is there and waiting to be claimed.

Clinical trial shows targeted therapy shrinks tumors; a step toward individualized treatment

HOUSTON - Low-grade serous ovarian cancer is less common and aggressive than the high-grade variety, yet exceptionally difficult to treat when frontline therapy fails.

"After surgery, with or without pre-surgical chemotherapy, when low-grade serous ovarian cancer persists or returns, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy are relatively ineffective," said David Gershenson, M.D., professor in The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Gynecological Oncology and Reproductive Medicine.

Response rates for treatment are measured in single digits. Gershenson and colleagues have spent the greater part of 20 years characterizing the disease, which makes up 10 percent of ovarian cancer cases, and searching for new ways to treat it. Cancer recurs or persists in 80 to 85 percent of patients.

A phase II clinical trial by the National Cancer Institute's Gynecological Oncology Group provides the first evidence of a drug that shows a relatively high response rate for these patients.

Selumetinib halts growth or shrinks tumors

In the first-targeted therapy clinical trial for low-grade serous ovarian cancer, eight of 52 (15 percent) patients had a complete or objective partial response (tumor shrinkage) and 34 (65 percent) had no disease progression during the two-year course of the study. Study results appear in the February edition of The Lancet Oncology.

"These are remarkably encouraging results for what can ultimately be a devastating disease," said Gershenson, the paper's senior author.

These patients have a median overall survival of 80 months, about twice as long as those with high-grade disease, who are typically in their 60s when diagnosed and comprise 90 percent of ovarian cancer patients. The average age of women with low-grade cancer falls in the early 40s, Gershenson said, and it's not uncommon to see women in their 20s, 30s and 40s and the occasional teenager with the disease.

High-grade serous ovarian cancer is susceptible to chemotherapy upon relapse or recurrence.

Median overall survival not reached

Cancer-causing genetic mutations in BRAF and KRAS genes occur more frequently in low-grade ovarian cancer, so the researchers chose a drug that targets the molecular network that includes those genes.

Selumetinib inhibits MEK1/2, a critical molecule in what's known as the MAPK pathway, which includes BRAF and KRAS.

All 52 patients had received at least one previous therapy, with 30 having had three or more. Clinical trial results with selumetinib include:

  • Median progression-free survival of 11 months and 34 patients (65 percent) went at least six months without their disease worsening.
  • Two-year overall survival of 55 percent.
  • Median overall survival had not been reached, because more than half of patients (61 percent) remained alive at the time of data cutoff for the study.
  • No treatment-related deaths.

Side effects ranged from cardio and gastrointestinal toxicity to pain, fatigue, anemia and dermatological effects. Of the 52 patients, 22 had their doses reduced and 13 ultimately left the study due to side effects.

Researchers obtained tumor samples sufficient for DNA analysis from 34 patients. While 14 patients had KRAS mutations and two had BRAF mutations, there was no connection between having those mutations and whether the patients responded to selumetinib.

Gershenson said researchers will further explore the question of matching drug to mutation during a larger phase 2/3 clinical trial that he will lead with investigators from the NCI Gynecological Oncology Group and the United Kingdom. The study will enroll 250 patients and is likely to begin later this summer.

Phase 2 trials generally do not include a control or comparison group, but the team noted treatment results for 58 women not in the trial who were treated at MD Anderson with current options. Between them, these patients received 108 different chemotherapy regimens, which produced one complete and three partial responses for an overall response rate of 3.7 percent.

A step toward personalized therapy for ovarian cancer

In an accompanying commentary, Sven Mahner, M.D., and Jacobus Pfisterer, M.D., Ph.D., German oncologists who did not participate in the research, note that the study is a step toward individualized treatment for ovarian cancer that reflects important molecular differences between low-grade and high-grade disease.

The response rate and disease stabilization rate are "particularly promising in a setting of heavily pretreated recurrent disease."

"A strength of the study is mandatory reference pathology of recurrent disease to ensure exclusion of patients with progression to high-grade disease, who are likely to benefit from chemotherapy, and recurrent borderline ovarian tumors that have excellent prognosis with salvage surgery alone," Mahner and Pfisterer wrote.

FAA clears Boeing to fly 787 Dreamliners in limited testing, ferrying

Fans of the 787 Dreamliner haven't had much reason to cheer for the past few weeks when the FAA grounded all US jets over concerns of battery failures. While there's no update on the reported fix, Boeing can at least say that the 787 is clear to fly again. Sort of. The FAA has given permission to Boeing to conduct flight tests under certain conditions. The company has to conduct battery- and insulation-related pre-flight inspections, watch battery behavior like a hawk, use only its own pilots and fly over unpopulated areas. Harsh terms to be sure, although we won't have to wait for the dry runs to see the 787 airborne once again: the FAA also gave Boeing clearance to ferry one of the airliners from Fort Worth, Texas to Everett, Washington after some paint work. It went off without a hitch, as you'd infer from the photo above. We're still some distance away from once again hopping on Dreamliners for long-haul flights, but the aircraft will at least have a chance to flex their muscles before they resume their main duties.

Android dominated in Q4, found on more than half of all smartphones

Mobile Market Share Q4 2012Android

Android had another explosive quarter in December. The latest numbers from research firm Canalys revealed that Google?s (GOOG) operating system powered a third of all mobile phones shipped in the fourth quarter of 2012. Worldwide shipments of mobile phones remained flat at 438.1 million units, however smartphone shipments increased 37% to 216.5 million units. Android accounted for 34% of all mobile phone shipments and 69% of smartphone shipments in the quarter, while iOS smartphones accounted for 11% of all mobile phones and 22% of all smartphones.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry 10 browser smokes iOS 6 and Windows Phone 8 in comparison test [video]]

While Samsung (005930) had another strong quarter, growing 78% year-over-year, Chinese vendors such as Huawei (002502), ZTE (0763), and Lenovo (LNGVY) all grew by triple-digit percentages. Samsung shipped 62.9 million smartphones in Q4 for a 29% share of the market, ahead of Apple?s (AAPL) 47.8 million units and 22.1% market share. Rounding out the top five were Huawei with shipments of 11.5 million units, ZTE at 10.1 million, and Lenovo with 9.5 million units.

[More from BGR: A hellish June led by Apple and Samsung may steamroll BlackBerry, other contenders]

Despite already being the largest mobile market in the world, China saw significant growth and accounted for 73% of all shipments in Q4 compared to 40% in 2011. Smartphone shipments in China increased by 113% to 64.7 million units, however Apple?s struggles remained and it continued to lose market share to Samsung and other manufacturers.

?China is a massive growth prospect, but Apple is not making the market share impact there that it is in other markets,? said Nicole Peng, Canalys? China research director. ?The lack of a device on the China Mobile network is a big drawback, combined with high price points. Addressing these issues with the combination of a TD-SCDMA device and a cheaper model would open the flood-gates.?

How men and women organize their (online) social networks differently

Feb. 7, 2013 ? Men and women socialize differently, and it turns out these gender differences hold true in online games that involve social interaction.

A new quantitative study of data assembled from the online multiplayer game Pardus shows how females and males manage their social networks drastically differently.

"It is fascinating that we maybe see traces of a million years of social evolution in a computer game," says Santa Fe Institute External Professor Stefan Thurner, a professor for Complex Systems of Science at the Medical University of Vienna, who co-wrote the paper with his colleague Michael Szell, now at MIT.

The paper, "How Women Organize Social Networks Different from Men," published February 7 in Scientific Reports, finds many of the same characteristic differences between men and women that are observed in the real world.

Females have more communication partners, engage in economic activities to a greater degree, attract positive behavior, organize in clusters, reciprocate friendships, take fewer risks than men, and show a preference for stability in local networks.

Males try to talk most often with those who talk with many, reciprocate friendships with other males much less frequently, and respond quite quickly to female friendship initiatives.

Online multiplayer games like Pardus, with their detailed data about players' social interactions and networks, allow researchers to quantify the online society on a systemic level.

While taking into account the minimal probability of gender-swapping (an estimated 15 percent, from among the Pardus population of 300,000 players), Thurner and Szell were able to able to assess the networking behaviors of male and female players.

"In the real world," observes Thurner, "it is extremely difficult to obtain different types of social networks of a set of people at the same time with the same resolution, even though we leave electronic fingerprints almost everywhere nowadays."

As for its possible applications? "One can use these kinds of insights to do all sorts of things, from marketing to group formations," says Thurner. "Right now, I would not bet too many millions on business models based on these findings, but there is potential."

Thurner's past research of online games has resulted in other quantitatively derived insights about human social behavior and structures, from how people decide to migrate, to how positive and negative behavior spreads through a social network, to how people form relationships.

Mail Gets its First Suicide Bomber

After French forces changed the dynamic of the conflict in Mali, it has now taken on another new, and sadly?predictable, turn?suicide attacks.?A?Tuareg militant blew himself up next to a group Malian soliders on Friday, but fortunately he only killed himself and injured just one. It's the first suicide attack in Mali since French forces joined the fight against Islamic militants last month.

RELATED: U.S Will Provide Tactical Support in the Sky to Get French Military into Mali

It probably won't be the last, either. For the first 10 months or so of the rebellious conflict that began last spring, it's been a series of battles between armed militant groups and poorly-trained, but better armed Malian soliders. That meant skirmishes that more closely resembled a traditional?guerrilla?war. However, as we've seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, and even Pakistan and Yemen, as Western forces take over the conflict, they can overwhelm and scatter the insurgents, which is when they begin to rely on suicide attacks, IEDs, and other tactics that don't require a stand-up fight against a much stronger force.

RELATED: Mali's President Reported Safe as Some Foreign Funds Disappear

If that patten happens in Mali, France may soon find itself in a situation that will feel very?similar?to Americans, as they watch a traditional shooting war turn into a peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operation. And just like the American military in Afghanistan and Iraq found out, those are much harder to extract yourself from.

Five-Star Match of the Week: Rey Mysterio vs. Dean Malenko - Cruiserweight Championship Match, The Great American Bash 1996

Every Wednesday, WWE Classics and Greatest Matches team up with your favorite Superstars to bring you the Five-Star Match of the Week. We ask a Superstar in the WWE locker room to select one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time, and WWE.com brings you that full-length match, uncut.

When discussing the most underrated competitors in the history of the squared circle, Dean Malenko?s name is always mentioned in the conversation. The mere fact that Malenko is underrated has become a major facet of his persona. Still, despite his stature as an underappreciated Superstar, there are so many of The Iceman?s encounters that could be tallied for a featured Five-Star Match of the Week. When WWE Classics spoke to Malenko backstage at a recent WWE event, he chose one of his best: the night he defended his Cruiserweight Championship against Rey Mysterio in the luchador?s astounding WCW debut.

(READ: MOST UNDERRATED WRESTLERS)

?That was a special night for me because Rey was an opponent I always wanted to work against in the ring,? Malenko revealed to WWE Classics. ?I asked the offices of WCW if we could bring him in for a shot at my Cruiserweight Championship, because it was a match that I anticipated having a lot of fun with. I love when two styles clash ? Rey being a lucha libre style performer and a very impactful, aerially talented guy, and myself being more of a mat technician.? (MORE MALENKO)

The two innovative lightweights just missed each other in ECW. Malenko departed the Philadelphia-based organization in August 1995 and Mysterio arrived there the following month. In WCW, the Cruiserweight Championship had recently been revived and ?The Man of 1,000 Holds? was emerging as the division?s star.

(READ: BEST TECHNICAL WRESTLERS)

?What really stands out about that night was the guys in the back being really disappointed seeing Rey,? Malenko recalled. ?They thought he was really small and very young-looking, which we kind of laugh at now. But it ended up being one of the only times in 20-some odd years of being in the business that I walked back in the dressing room and my peers stood on their feet applauding this guy?s ability and what he did that night. It was a really neat scene for me to see and it definitely welcomed Rey into the fold of WCW. It was a great moment and one that I cherish very highly.?

The match was so well-received that Mysterio received another opportunity for the title the following night on Nitro. Although he was unsuccessful again, Rey defeated Dean to win the Cruiserweight Championship less than a month later. (MORE MYSTERIO)

?Of course, you want to go out every night and have the best match possible ? for the show and for yourself,? Malenko explained. ?But that match definitely went way over my expectations. It was a great night for myself, a great night for Rey and a great night for fans out there that never got to see a guy like Rey Mysterio. He?s very special. There?s nobody like him and never will be.?

And for that matter, there will never be another Dean Malenko.

Borough Market from the top of the Shard

After a two-year closure to allow Network Rail to build a huge great viaduct through the middle, Three Crown Square, the old bit of Borough Market, re-opens today. There?s a rather ugly new steel and glass entrance on Southwark Street, and a few new concrete piles to support the additional rail infrastructure, but hopefully the spirit of the original won?t have been lost. The Market has also released a new interactive map to help the grazing masses navigate their way around.

A novel idea, this: BYOC is a new cocktail bar in Covent Garden where you bring along your own spirits and have the bartenders knock up something for you. There?s no alcohol for sale on the premises, so the quality of your drink will be directly related to what you show up with. Entry is ?25 per person. We?re thinking of heading down with half a bottle of Diamond White, some Unicum Zwack and a can of Irn Bru and seeing what they can muster.

Keeping in the spirit of do-it-yourself drinking, The Lazy Fox in Fulham has introduced a self-service option, where you can pull your own pints. Read more at Time Out?s blog.

Want to see the view from the Shard but don?t fancy forking out ?25 for a ticket to the top or tens of millions for an apartment? Another way up is through one of the restaurants. This week Hot Dinners reported that the Aqua Group will be opening two venues in the tower: one, Aqua London, serving modern British cuisine, and the other a branch of popular Hong Kong diner Hutong. Both are scheduled to open in May.

Finally: if you?re the sort who likes to set arbitrary targets each month, and are wondering what to do now that Dry January is over, then here?s an idea: Indie February is encouraging people to eschew chains and big brands in favour of independent stores, restaurants and bars for your food and drink needs over the coming month. Follow the Twitter hashtag #IndieFeb for more.

Iran's Ahmadinejad wants an alliance with Egypt

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on the first visit to Cairo by an Iranian leader in more than three decades, called for a strategic alliance with Egypt and said he had offered the cash-strapped Arab state a loan, but drew a cool response.

Ahmadinejad said outside forces were trying to prevent a rapprochement between the Middle East's two most populous nations, at odds since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution and Egypt's signing of a peace treaty with Israel in the same year.

"We must all understand that the only option is to set up this alliance because it is in the interests of the Egyptian and Iranian peoples and other nations of the region," the official MENA news agency quoted him in remarks to Egyptian journalists published on Wednesday.

The two countries have not restored diplomatic ties since Egypt overthrew its long term leader Hosni Mubarak in 2011, but its first Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, gave Ahmadinejad a red-carpet welcome on Tuesday to a summit of Islamic nations.

"There are those striving to prevent these two great countries from coming together despite the fact that the region's problems require this meeting, especially the Palestinian question," Ahmadinejad said.

Egypt's foreign minister played down the significance of the visit, telling Reuters the Iranian leader, one of several heads of state to get the red-carpet treatment, was in Cairo chiefly for the Islamic summit beginning on Wednesday, "so it's just a normal procedure. That's all."

He had earlier reassured Gulf Arab countries that Egypt would not sacrifice their security.

Egypt's leading Sunni Muslim scholar scolded Ahmadinejad on Tuesday when he visited the historic al-Azhar mosque and university over Tehran's attitude to its Gulf Arab neighbors and attempts to spread Shi'ite influence in Sunni countries.

In his meeting with Egyptian reporters, MENA said Ahmadinejad denied accusations Iran was interfering in Bahrain, where a Shi'ite majority lives under minority Sunni rule.

Three Egyptians and a Syrian were detained on suspicion of trying to attack the Iranian president at another mosque, security sources said. They were held overnight but released on bail of 500 Egyptian pounds ($75) each on Wednesday.

Video footage shot by a Turkish cameraman appeared to show a bearded man trying twice to throw a shoe at Ahmadinejad as he was mobbed by well-wishers on leaving the Hussein mosque.

The president was not hit but was hustled to his car by security men, stopping to wave before he was driven away.

The security sources said the three Egyptians held were all members of the al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, a hardline Islamist group that took up arms against the state in the 1990s but has moved into mainstream politics since Mubarak was toppled.

In the Arab world, throwing a shoe is a serious insult. An Iraqi journalist hurled a shoe at then-U.S. President George W. Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in 2008, forcing Bush to duck to avoid being hit.

Al-Ahram daily quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in an interview that Iran had offered to lend money to Egypt despite being under international economic sanctions over its nuclear program.

"I have said previously that we can offer a big credit line to the Egyptian brothers, and many services," he said. He did not say if there had been any response.

The president said the Iranian economy had been affected by sanctions but it is a "great economy" that was witnessing "positive matters", saying exports were increasing gradually.

The United States and its Western allies have sought to choke off Iran's vital oil exports by embargoing imports from the Islamic republic and cutting its access to shipping, insurance and finance.

Egypt disclosed on Tuesday that its foreign reserves had fallen below the $15 billion level that covers three months' imports despite recent deposits by Qatar to support it.

Tourism has been badly hit by unrest since the uprising that toppled authoritarian Mubarak, and investment has stalled due to the ensuing political and economic uncertainty.

Ahmadinejad said there had been scant progress on restoring ties between the two countries.

"No change happened in the last two years, but discussions between us developed and grew, and His Excellency President Mohamed Mursi visited Iran and met us, as he met the Iranian foreign minister. And we previously contacted Egypt to know about what is happening with Syrian affairs," he said.

One persistent obstacle to ties in Cairo's eyes was the naming of a street in Tehran after an Egyptian Islamist militant who led the 1981 assassination of President Anwar Sadat, who signed the treaty with Israel.

"On the question of the street name or its removal, these are matters that will be dealt with gradually," Ahmadinejad said.
