On the sun: Massive solar flare unleashed

An X-class flare erupted on the sun on Monday, according to scientists. These flares, sometimes interfering with radio signals here on Earth, are likely to continue as the sun approaches the peak of its magnetic activity in 2013.?

The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare late Monday (Oct. 22), releasing waves of radiation into space that have already caused a short radio blackout on Earth.

The?flare erupted from the sunspot AR 11598?(short for Active Region 11598), and reached peak brightness at 11:22 p.m. EDT (0322 GMT this morning, Oct. 23), according to scientists working on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a space telescope that constantly monitors the sun with high-definition cameras. It ranked as an X1.8?solar flare, one of the strongest types of solar flares, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) run by NOAA and the National Weather Service.

The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective. "This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on?Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks skywatching and space weather events.?

Solar flares are caused when magnetic activity ramps up in certain patches, called sunspots, on the surface of our star. Scientists measure the strength of solar flares in terms of energy classes, with X-class flares the most powerful sun storms. Moderate flares rank as class M storms and can supercharge Earth's northern lights displays when aimed at our planet. Class C solar flares are the weakest of the bunch and have little effect on Earth. [Photos: Sunspots on Earth's Closest Star]

Monday's solar flare was captured in photos and video by SDO, and appears as a bright white flash coming off the sun. The flare was a short-lived type of solar eruption called an impulsive flare (as opposed to the other type, called a gradual flare).

"Impulsive flares aren't generally associated with severe space weather, and additionally, this region is still several days away from directly facing Earth from center disk," SWPC officials wrote. "Nonetheless, the potential for continued activity remains, so stay tuned for updates as Region 1598 makes its way across the visible disk."

Solar flares often release bubbles of charged plasma (called coronal mass ejections) into space that, when they impact Earth, can cause geomagnetic storms that disrupt radio communications and power grids and create especially beautiful displays of the?northern and southern lights?(auroras). This flare, however, did not unleash a coronal mass ejection, so it is predicted to cause little disruption on Earth and no special auroras. Its powerful radiation was enough, though, to briefly disrupt radios here last night.

The sun?is getting more and more active lately as it approaches an expected peak of magnetic activity in 2013. This activity naturally waxes and wanes on an 11-year weather pattern. The sun's current cycle is called Solar Cycle 24.

Usual Back Pain Causes as well as How to Stay clear of Them ...

In my encounter there are 5 key physical back pain causes.

1. Posture:

Each part of the body was created to be in a particular position. Nevertheless, even if we begin with perfect posture, contemporary residing and the requirements of our work environments frequently soften against us as well as favor unsatisfactory pose. Over time this damages the technical set up of the body which, when checked, may breakdown as well as the outcome will be discomfort. The problems I see a lot of are an outcome of unsatisfactory resting, standing as well as functioning poses. Frequently a small change in an individual?s posture removes this kind of back as well as neck pain. It is necessary to find out as well as sustain an excellent posture.

2. Accidents as well as mishaps:

Overuse of muscular tissues as well as joints in a sloppy movement design may induce back as well as neck pain. This is due to excess strain being placed on one muscular tissue team due to an inequality in the effectiveness in between muscle groups as well as may lead to muscle as well as joint damages. I view fractures to vertebrae bones led to by falls and car/bike accidents.

3. Stress:

Just as your character replies to strain in lots of methods so does your body. The preliminary counteraction of your body to worry is to tighten up. When the muscles of your body tighten this has a tightening impact on the nerves and ligaments as well as the joint to which those muscles connect. This can easily in itself induce discomfort as well as stress on the organs that the tight muscular tissue surrounds. This typically results in poor operation of the organ. If this continues for any length of time bodily wellness can be jeopardized in many ways. Despite just what we might assume, muscles do not forget or let go of anxiety conveniently, so frequently the trauma I am coping with is the outcome of very old strain.

4. The aging process:

The most usual back pain causes and neck discomfort I see is growing old. Frequently individuals are urged that there is no therapy accessible to deal with growing old linked pain ? this is not correct. The relief from discomfort that treatment may deliver often leaves patients astounded as well as speculating why they have endured their pain for so long. Most certainly soft tissues obtain thicker as well as joints as well as discs dry with age and this procedure may produce nerves and muscles around the spinal column being influenced. This might lead to pain, pins and needles, pins as well as needles as well as weakness. The most typical age associated ailments I manage are degenerative disc illness (vertebral constriction) or trapped nerves. A trapped nerve can easily produce discomfort afar from the back, commonly referred to as sciatica. This very painful ailment reacts outstandingly to proper therapy.

5. Medical ailments:

On a daily basis I treat rheumatoid arthritis and Osteo-arthritis, Spondyolisthesis, Scoliosis, as well as osteoporosis. Although these are bodily disorders they as well can be helped and handled well with physiotherapy treatment.

If you are dealing with back pain you will certainly would like to make sure that you speak to with your specialist before trying any type of exercises or stretches.

When doing these back pain stretches at home you will definitely would like to ensure you are doing them effectively, a few tips for when you work out or stretch are:

??? Begin at your neck muscles as well as function down the body

??? Make sure that all back pain stretches are sluggish as well as gentle, and that you do not stretch previous your regular assortment of motion. You will observe over time that you have the ability to stretch much additional

??? You must never ever jump while stretching, keep it decrease and soft

??? Make sure that you do at least 5 reps for each of your physical exercises; for your stretches make sure that you are holding them for at least 10-20 seconds

??? Do not try and hold your breath while you extend, discover to breathe at the starting of your stretch and exhale while you hold it

??? Attempt to alternate just what side you are stretching so that you do not simply decrease one side of your body and then the other

Fantasy Football Guide: Who to Start, Sit, Substitute During Week 7 ...

Week 7 of the fantasy football season is creeping up fast and if you are 0-6, your season?s death knell is tolling loudly, but there?s still time, precious little time, but time nonetheless.

This week is tough because many players on Atlanta, Denver, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia and San Diego are on a bye week, which means fantasy players on those teams are unavailable.

But fear not!

Here are some guys you might want to pick up to fill-in for them or possibly for the long haul.

(The percentages following the players are how heavily they are owned on Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football. I try to stay under 50% owned for the column if I can.)

Quarterbacks:

Josh Freeman (40 percent) ? Freeman blew up the Kansas City defense for 328 yards and three touchdowns and gets the New Orleans Saints this week, who have given up 298.8 passing yards per game and over a 67 percentage completion rate. That makes for a decent fill-in for Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick or Philip Rivers.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (53 percent) -- So I already broke my under 50 percent owned rule, but since he?s been such playing poorly lately, he may be dropped in some leagues this week. The good news is he gets the Tennessee Titans this week. The Titans have given up an average of 298.8 yards passing (28th in the NFL) to opposing quarterbacks so far this season, along with 13 passing touchdowns (28th in the NFL).

Christian Ponder (40 percent) -- Ponder doesn?t have a cake walk schedule in week seven, but does get the Buccaneers without Aquib Talib in week eight. He?s also been playing well enough that he needs to be owned as a backup. Last week against the Redskins, he threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns and has thrown two touchdowns in four of his last five games. He threw the ball eight times last week to Adrian Peterson, which will help his overall numbers and Percy Harvin and Kyle Rudolph are playing at the top of their game.

Brandon Weeden (12 percent) -- Brandon Weeden has averaged 280.2 yards passing per game after his week one debacle against the Eagles and has thrown for two touchdowns each of the last two games. He?s also found a nice deep target in Josh Gordon and with the Browns defense giving up 27 points a game; Weeden will need to keep throwing. Add to that, this week he faces the Indianapolis Colts who are in the middle as far as pass defensive statistics, but they have faced Blaine Gabbert and Mark Sanchez, which helped their stats and Sanchez threw for two touchdowns against them.

Running Backs:

Felix Jones (20 percent)/Phillip Tanner (0 percent) ? Demarco Murray has already been ruled out for week seven according to ESPN?s Adam Schefter, so that means Felix Jones will most likely get the start against the Carolina Panthers who are giving up 128 rushing yards (26th in the NFL) and 4.8 yards per carry (27th). That's not the only upside for Jones because it looks like Murray may be out for several weeks and a starting running back of Jones? caliber is hard to come by off the waiver wire.

Phillip Tanner will serve as his backup and Jones has been injury prone, so he could be worth owning, especially in deeper leagues.

William Powell (31 percent)? Powell would be the No. 1 pick up this week if it wasn?t for a tough schedule against the rush for the Cardinals, but he is very much worth owning as the Cardinals starting running back. Last week he had 13 carries for 70 yards against a poor Bills defense. He had a nice preseason and has the trust of the coaches, so he should remain a flex/bye week play.

Montario Hardesty (3 percent) ? Hardesty stepped in well for Trent Richardson after he hurt his ribs, rushing 15 times for 56 yards and a touchdown, so Richardson owners should no doubt grab him in case Richardson can?t go. Since the Browns face the Colts, the reward is quite high if Hardesty ends up starting. The Colts just gave up 166 yards and three touchdowns to slow-footed Shonn Greene and on the season they are giving up 142.6 yards per game (31st) and 5.2 yards per carry (32nd). You?ll want to start the ball boy against them if he gets playing time. ??Wide Receiver:

Josh Gordon (14 percent) ? He?s a boom or bust player and has boom over the last two weeks. You can?t count on this kind of production week in and week out, but as a bye-week player, he?s worth a fill-in with hopes that he?ll start seeing more targets and become a consistent fantasy player.

Brandon Gibson (21 percent)/Chris Givens (3 percent) ? With the loss of Danny Amendola, there was a big void to fill in the Rams passing game and so far it looks like Gibson and Givens are the main void fillers so far with nine and seven targets respectively. The good news is the Rams face the Packers and Patriots the next two weeks and will be in pass mode for most of the game.

Kendall Wright (38 percent) ? Wright has 15 receptions over the last two weeks and faces two easy defenses in the Bills and Colts the next two weeks. He should be owned in all PPR leagues.

Donnie Avery (15 percent) ? Avery hasn?t been producing like I had hoped, but he continues to get plenty targets, averaging eight a game and it looks like he will continue to get those, especially with the Colts being down often by giving up 29 points a game. The Colts also have a nice schedule coming up against Cleveland, Tennessee, Miami, Jacksonville, New England, Buffalo, Detroit, Tennessee, Houston (tough), and Kansas City.

Devery Henderson (8 percent) ? Henderson had a big game last week with Jimmy Graham and Lance Moore hurting. Though we aren?t sure what Graham and Moore?s status is going to be, it would be a good idea to scoop up Henderson, because there?s a good chance one or both will be limited again.

Tight End:

David Thomas ? This goes back to the Jimmy Graham injury. Thomas looks like he would be the next tight end in line if Graham is out.

Brandon Myers ? The Raiders' tight end isn?t very flashy, but he is averaging 58 receiving yards per game, which ranks him sixth for tight ends. He just missed a touchdown last week and if he can start getting more red zone looks he could have value.

Check out some nice and not so nice matchups in this week?s sit or start.

Start

Quarterbacks:

Eli Manning -- Manning finished as the 20th best fantasy quarterback last week against a tough 49ers defense. This week should be a turnaround against the Redskins who have been giving up the most passing yards in the league per game at 341.

Andrew Luck ? The Colts face the Browns who are giving up 308 yards passing a game. Luck had a poor game against the Jets last week, but the two previous games he averaged 337.5 yards and two touchdowns. At home after a poor game on the road, he should have a nice bounce back.

Running Backs:

Chris Johnson ? If you an unfortunate owner of Chris Johnson, you thankfully get an extremely good match-up this week against the Bills. They have been giving up 136 yards rushing and over a touchdown per game to go along with a healthy 5.1 yards per carry. Johnson had a decent game last week and hopefully will build on it.

Doug Martin ? The rookie finally had a nice game last week against the Chiefs. He accumulated 131 total yards on just 15 touches and this week he faces the New Orleans Saints who have given up a whopping 140 yards rushing a game at a five yards per carry clip. And even though the Saints will most likely get an early lead, Martin is used in the passing game enough to still have value.

Wide Receivers:

Kenny Britt ? Britt had 62 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers last week. This week he faces a Bills defense that has given up 11 touchdowns to wide receivers.? Add that to a long week of rest and, Britt will show up big.

Hakeem Nicks ? After a down game against a tough 49ers secondary, Nicks gets his easiest matchup of the season against the Redskins who have given up 100+ yard receiving games to six different wide receivers this season. Nicks was coming of his knee injury last week and should be in better shape for this cakewalk.

Tight Ends:

Scott Chandler ?? The Titans are the worst defenders against tight ends in the NFL this season. They have given up a league=high 45 receptions for 429 yards and seven touchdowns. Chandler is a strong candidate for a touchdown this week.

Martellus Bennett ? The Redskins have been just about as bad against tight ends as the Titans, giving up 42 receptions for 431 yards and five touchdowns. Bennett has a plus match-up for sure, but make sure he practices fully this week.

Sit

Quarterbacks:

Matthew Stafford ? The Lions and Stafford have been scuffling of late and it won?t get much easier along the lake in Chicago. The Bears have given up a league-low four passing touchdowns and have a league-high 13 interceptions.

Joe Flacco ? The Houston Texans were just Aaron Rodger-ed pretty good on Sunday night and they will be looking to win back some of their dignity against Joe Flacco at Reliant Stadium. Against non-chip on their shoulder MVPs, the Texans play extremely well, having given up only a 53% completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks.

Running Backs:

Frank Gore ? The Seahawks defense is on par with the 49ers right now, so this Thursday night game could end up in a 3-3 tie. The Seahawks are giving up a league leading 50 yards rushing per game and 2.8 yards per carry. That is crazy.

Shonn Greene ? The Patriots rush defense has been strong this season allowing only one rushing touchdown to a running back, 65 rushing yards a game and 3.4 yards per carry. And those numbers come after facing Ray Rice, Marshawn Lynch, Chris Johnson, Willis McGahee, C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. Try to trade Greene today.

Wide Receivers:

Brandon Lloyd ? The N.Y. Jets lost Darrelle Revis, but Antonio Cromartie has stepped up strong in his place and should shadow Brandon Lloyd this week. With Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez available, there?s a good chance Lloyd won?t see as many targets as he is used to.

Steve Smith ? The Cowboys pass defense has been one of the toughest in the league this season. They?ve been giving up on average 130 yards to receivers and under nine receptions. That?s not just to a single receiver, that?s to all the receivers on the opposing team. They?ve also only given up a total of three touchdowns to wide receivers this season as well. Be wary of Mr. Smith.

Tight Ends:

Fred Davis ? Going up against the Giants has not been easy for tight ends this season. They have yet to give up a touchdown to one and they have faced Witten, Olsen, Celek and Davis.

Vernon Davis ? The Seahawks have had to face Jason Witten, Jermichael Finley, Greg Olsen, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski and they?ve only allowed one touchdown. The 49ers will want to bounce back after getting beaten down by the Giants, but it might be hard to do against the Seahawks tough defense.

The Quadski: An ATV that Transforms into a Jet-Ski - Core77

Posted by hipstomp / Rain Noe? | ?17 Oct 2012 ?|? Comments (0)

quadski001.jpg

Alan Gibbs is an entrepreneur from New Zealand, and for years he's dreamed of mass-manufacturing an amphibious car. He knew it would work; he successfully built a one-off for himself, the Aquada you see below, nearly two decades ago. But after setting up a company to mass produce them, he ran into problems ranging from engine supply to U.S. automobile laws.

quadski002.jpg

The American auto laws were the tough thing to get around, as they require airbags for passenger cars; while in the water, waves slapping harmlessly against the vehicle's hull would constantly trigger the sensors.

So Gibbs changed tack. By creating a smaller, ATV-like vehicle not subject to automotive laws, his dream vehicle was realized, albeit at a slightly smaller scale.

quadski003.jpg

His new product is called the Quadski, and it's going on sale later this year. Here's Gibbs himself narrating a demo:

Pretty nuts, no? And even at $40,000 a pop, Gibbs Sports Amphibians expects to move 1,000 units in the first year of sales.

Roger Zemeckis Still Believes in the Roger Rabbit Sequel

robert zemeckis might direct wizard of oz3 Robert Zemeckis Says Roger Rabbit Sequel May Still Happen

In an interview with Showbiz411, Robert Zemeckis teased fans with the prospect of a sequel to his 1988 classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the comedy/mystery/film noir/cartoon/live-action hybrid that has delighted fans and enraged grammarians for years. (Where is the question mark that belongs at the end of that title? That?s the real mystery here, Zemeckis!)

While promoting his upcoming film Flight, Zemeckis stated, ?I have a [Roger Rabbit?sequel] script at Disney, and we?re just waiting for all the executive changes to settle down there.? The ?executive changes? he mentions are in reference to?Alan Horn, the former president of Warner Bros., who a few months ago headed over to Disney to take over as Chairman there.

Still, there are some other obstacles to overcome, chiefly the fact that star Bob Hoskins recently announced he was retiring from movies (a development which also robbed the world of a potential Super Mario Bros. sequel). And if there is anything that we learned from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it?s that sometimes the long-awaited sequel to an 80?s classic isn?t worth the wait.?Then again, Robert Zemeckis is the director responsible for Back to the Future Part II and Part III, which are widely regarded by me to be among the best sequels ever made.

What do you think? Are you excited by the prospect of a?Roger Rabbit sequel? Let us know in the comments.

Philippines, Muslim rebels agree on peace pact

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? The Philippine government and the country's largest Muslim rebel group have reached a preliminary peace deal that is a major breakthrough toward ending a decades-long insurgency that killed tens of thousands and held back development in the south.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said the "framework agreement" calling for an autonomous region for minority Muslims in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation was an assurance the Moro Islamic Liberation Front insurgents will no longer aim to secede.

The agreement, announced Sunday and to be signed Oct. 15 in Manila, spells out principles on major issues, including the extent of power, revenues and territory of the Muslim region. If all goes well, a final peace deal could be reached by 2016, when Aquino's six-year term ends, officials said.

"This framework agreement paves the way for final and enduring peace in Mindanao," Aquino said, referring to the southern Philippine region and homeland of the country's Muslims. "This means that the hands that once held rifles will be put to use tilling land, selling produce, manning work stations and opening doorways of opportunity."

He cautioned that "the work does not end here" and that details of the accord still need to be worked out. Those talks are expected to be tough but doable, officials and rebels said.

Rebel vice chairman Ghadzali Jaafar said the agreement provides a huge relief to people who have long suffered from war and are "now hoping the day would come when there will be no need to bear arms."

The deal marks the most significant progress in 15 years of on-and-off negotiations with the 11,000-strong Moro group on ending an uprising that has left more than 120,000 people dead, displaced about 2 million others and held back development in the south. Western governments have long worried that rebel strongholds could become breeding grounds for al-Qaida-affiliated extremists.

One of the groups not party to the peace agreement is the Abu Sayyaf, which is notorious for ransom kidnappings and terrorist attacks over the last two decades. Its small bands of militants, mostly confined to jungles in two southern island provinces, continue to battle U.S.-trained Filipino troops.

"The parties agree that the status quo is unacceptable," the 13-page agreement says. It calls for the creation of a new Muslim autonomous region called "Bangsamoro" to replace an existing one created in 1989 which Aquino characterized as a "failed experiment," where poverty and corruption have forced many "to articulate their grievances through the barrel of a gun."

The accord also calls for the establishment of a 15-member Transition Commission to work out the details of the preliminary agreement and draft a law creating the new Muslim autonomous region in about two years.

Rebel forces would be deactivated gradually "beyond use," the agreement says, without specifying a timetable.

The Philippine government would continue to exercise exclusive powers over defense and security, foreign and monetary policy in the new autonomous region, where Muslims would be assured of an "equitable share of taxation, revenues, and the fruits of national patrimony ... and equal protection of laws and access to impartial justice," according to Aquino.

Philippine officials said the preliminary accord would be posted on the government's website for public scrutiny, and would be signed in Manila in the presence of Aquino, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Moro rebel chief Al Haj Murad Ibrahim.

Malaysia in particular has played a key role as a facilitator. The neighboring, Muslim-majority nation has historically close ties with Filipino Muslims and fears a repeat of a refugee crisis from the 1970s and 80s when hundreds of thousands of Filipinos fleeing violence in the south fled to Malaysian state of Sabah.

"It's been a long journey and this is an important milestone in our search for lasting peace," presidential peace talks adviser Teresita Deles told The Associated Press.

The United States, Britain, Malaysia and other countries welcomed the accord.

"This agreement is a testament to the commitment of all sides for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the southern Philippines," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement. "The next steps will be to ensure that the framework agreement is fully implemented."

The new Muslim region would be built upon an existing five-province autonomous territory, among the country's poorest and most violent, with more than 4 million people.

The Moro rebels earlier dropped a demand for a separate Muslim state and renounced terrorism.

Their negotiator, Mohagher Iqbal, earlier said his group would not lay down its weapons until a final peace accord is concluded. He said the insurgents could form a political party and run in democratic elections to get a chance at leading the autonomous region for which they have been fighting.

In Kuala Lumpur, Philippine government negotiator Marvic Leonen said both sides face the enormous task of working out the details. "We are not naive to say that there would be no obstacles. But the Philippine government will defend the agreement," Leonen said.

The challenges are many.

In 2008, the planned signing of a similar preliminary pact was scuttled when opponents went to the Supreme Court, which declared the agreement unconstitutional. Fighting erupted when three rebel commanders attacked Christian communities, and an ensuing military offensive killed more than 100 people and displaced about 750,000 villagers before a cease-fire ended the violence.

One of the hardline rebel commanders, Ameril Umbra Kato, broke off from the Moro rebels last year. Kato's forces launched attacks on several army camps and outposts in August, prompting another army offensive that killed more than 50 fighters in the 200-strong rebel faction.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front itself broke away in the 1980s from the Moro National Liberation Front, which signed a 1996 autonomy deal with the government. That peace accord did not lead to disarming of the group and many of the rebels have simply laid low in the south, still demanding that the government fulfill its commitments, including jobs, security and economic development.

Some former guerrillas also formed the Abu Sayyaf. They are mostly based in the southern provinces of Sulu and Basilan, where about 400 gunmen remain.

Company uses Ames Laboratory-developed technology to make titanium powder

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies, a start-up company based on technology developed at the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, has won the 2012 John Pappajohn Iowa Business Plan Competition.

The competition honors top business plans of companies in business for four years or less, with an aim of stimulating business development. The prize includes $25,000 in seed money.

"This competition was a great opportunity to develop our commercialization pathway, and the assistance we received from the Iowa State University John Pappajohn Entrepreneurship Center was invaluable," said Joel Rieken, co-founder of Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies. "The award certainly reaffirms our business model and provides us with more confidence as we move forward."

Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies plans to use several Ames Lab-developed technologies to make fine spherical titanium powder for use in military, biomedical and aerospace applications. Their process will increase the efficiency of the titanium powder making process and, thus, lower the cost of the powder to manufacturers.

Titanium's strength, light weight, biocompatibility and resistance to corrosion make it ideal for use in a variety of parts. But, working with titanium can be difficult when casting parts because molten titanium tends to react with the materials used to form machine molds. To address that, Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies will instead use gas atomization of titanium, which makes a fine, spherical powder form of titanium. Manufacturers can then press the powder together at high temperatures.

"In addition to getting around the difficulties with using molten titanium, using titanium powder has the benefits of conserving processing time and energy, and it produces less waste material," said Andy Heidloff, co-founder of Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies. "The overall process is better, except for the current problems of higher cost and lower availability of titanium powder. But those are the two problems IPAT is seeking to solve."

In Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies' process for titanium atomization, the metal is melted using a standard commercial process then heated and precisely guided by an Ames Laboratory-developed pour tube into a high intensity atomization nozzle, also developed at Ames Lab. The metal is then sprayed out in a fine droplet mist. Each droplet quickly cools and solidifies, creating a collection of many tiny spheres, forming fine titanium powder.

"IPAT's technology allows lightweight, high-strength parts to be fabricated at low cost," said Ames Laboratory Director Alex King. "These parts can be used in biomedical implants as well as in energy-efficient cars, planes and trains."

Iowa Powder Atomization Technologies plans to use the John Pappajohn Iowa Business Plan Competition prize winnings to further develop its business strategy, including a series of tests to determine how large they can scale the operation.

Earlier this year IPAT also was a winner of the Department of Energy's America's Next Top Energy Innovator Challenge, which recognizesd some of the most innovative and promising startup companies that took an option to license DOE-funded technologies through the America's Next Top Energy Innovator program.

The DOE Office of Science, the DOE Office of Fossil Energy, and the Iowa State University Research Foundation funded the original research on the gas atomizer technologies developed at Ames Laboratory.
