HBT: Scherzer optimistic after long toss session

Max Scherzer?s status for the postseason is in question after being scratched from two of his last three starts with shoulder problems, but the Tigers right-hander had a 10-minute long toss session yesterday and reported that ?everything went well.?

?I was able to go to 100 feet pain-free, threw all my pitches and had a feel on all of them,? Scherzer said, via Jason Beck of MLB.com. ?I?m getting close to being able to pitch in a game again.?

Now the question is whether that will be Wednesday, in the regular season finale, or not until the ALDS. That could be answered by how he feels following a bullpen session, but another factor is that the Tigers may have wrapped up the AL Central title by then and won?t need to use Scherzer on the final day.

If they?ve clinched Drew Smyly would draw the Game 162 start and the Tigers would give Scherzer some extra time to get ready for the playoffs.
