Israeli PM: UN bid to hurt Palestinian state quest

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister says the recognition of an independent state of Palestine in the U.N. General Assembly will not advance the Palestinians' quest for a homeland.

Benjamin Netanyahu says the Palestinians will not win a state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with the Jewish state and agree to security arrangements that protect Israel.

The Palestinians have resisted such declarations in the past. They say recognizing Israel as the Jewish homeland is liable to undermine their demand to repatriate Palestinian refugees. They also object to Netanyahu's demand for a long-term Israeli military presence in parts of the West Bank.

The General Assembly is expected later Thursday to vote on the Palestinian bid.

Travels in northeastern Brazil: Unfolding the reptile fauna of Len??is Maranhenses

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? In order to be effective, a Conservation Unit must have available a list of the species that live within it. They also should have detailed information about the distribution of species among the available habitats. It would be difficult to correctly plan the conservation actions and/or monitoring programs without some minimal knowledge about the species (who are the object of those measures).

"This is why our study is so important to the park," said Dr. Miranda from Universidade Federal do Maranh?o (CCAA/UFMA), leading author of the article, published in the open access journal Zookeys.

In Len??is Maranhenses National Park 42 species of reptiles were found. Approximately 80% of them live only in restinga habitats, which comprise about 20% of the area currently protected by the park. Restingas have been strongly disturbed by the clandestine openings of paths created to transport tourists to the dunes in the park, using off-road vehicles. This problem is more severe during the rainy season when paths become muddy quickly, and new ones are continuously opening. This could be extremely harmful to those habitats because their poor soil might severely limit natural recomposition.

"We recorded endangered species in Len??is Maranhenses; particularly sea turtles located in the beach habitats. No one has any idea about the animal activity there! Are they spawning? It's very likely, but we don't have any data! It would be very important to study and monitor those species in the 70 km of beaches of the Len??is Maranhenses National Park" adds Dr. Miranda.

Another turtle species, which deserves attention in Len??is Maranhenses, is the Brazilian Slider Turtle, which has a limited geographic distribution in the coast of Maranh?o, northeastern Brazil. This turtle is used as a source of food by the extremely poor inhabitants of Len??is Maranhenses and surrounding areas.

"We believe that it would be helpful to promote awareness campaigns to help the conservation of that species, but it is equally important to provide alternatives to the people that live there. These inhabitants, for example, could be placed into the tourism business by providing training courses. They could work as tourist guides, waiters, or cooks. This would not only improve their economic capacity, but also free them of the need to use the Brazilian Slider Turtle as a food item. The efforts for conservation will only be successful with a joint effort of scientists, policymakers and society. We have to talk to one another and look for solutions together," concluded Dr. Miranda.

Microsoft ads deride Google as bad place to shop

(AP) ? Microsoft is trying to skewer Google as a lousy holiday shopping guide in its latest attempt to divert more traffic to its Bing search engine.

The attack starts Wednesday with a marketing campaign focused on a recent change in how Google runs the part of its search engine devoted to shopping results. The revisions require merchants to pay Google to have their products listed in the shopping section.

In its new ads, Microsoft Corp. contends the new approach betrays Google Inc.'s longstanding commitment to provide the most trustworthy results on the Web, even if it means foregoing revenue. To punctuate its point, Microsoft is warning consumers that they risk getting "scroogled" if they rely on Google's shopping search service.

The message will be highlighted in TV commercials scheduled to run on NBC and CNN and newspaper ads in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. The blitz also will appear on billboards and online, anchored by a new website, Scroogled.com.

The barbs are likely to inject more antagonism into an already bitter rivalry between two of the world's best-known and most powerful technology companies.

Google's search engine is dominant on the Internet, with Bing running a distant second. Microsoft's Office and Windows software remains an integral part of personal computers, but Google has been reducing the importance of those programs and PCs with the success of Web-based services and its Android operating system for smartphones and tablet computers.

Google still doesn't require websites to pay to be listed in in its main database. That's the index providing the results for requests entered into Google's all-purpose search box. A query made there for a particular product, such as computers, will still include results from merchants who haven't paid for the privilege of being included.

But anyone who clicks on a tab at the top for shopping-specific results will see only listings for paying merchants. That means results from sites, including Web retailing giant Amazon.com Inc., aren't displayed unless they pay. Amazon so far has only occasionally paid to have some of its wares listed in Google's shopping section. Zappos, a site owned by Amazon, has been more willing to pay the price to be listed in Google's shopping results.

Google defends the fee-based approach as a way to encourage merchants to provide more comprehensive and accurate information about what they're selling.

"I think you just get a well-organized set of product information, ways to buy it, and really have a great experience there," CEO Larry Page said during a conference call with analysts last month.

In a statement late Tuesday, Google said it's pleased with the response to the new shopping system, which offers listings from some 100,000 sellers.

Google, like Microsoft, also accepts payments for ads that are triggered by specific search terms and appear to the right or on top of regular search results. Those are labeled in gray letters as ads.

Since its inception in 1998, Google has tried to cast itself as a force for good while depicting Microsoft as a ruthless empire.

But Google has become less cuddly as it has established itself as the Internet's main gateway ? and through that, as a well-oiled moneymaking machine. The Mountain View, Calif., company's search engine is so influential that government regulators in the U.S. and Europe have been investigating whether Google has been stifling competition by giving special preference to its own services in search results.

Microsoft, which faced its own antitrust inquiries more than a decade ago, is among the companies that had prodded the investigation of Google. This time, it's pouncing on Google for straying for from its own principles.

Since mid-October, Google's shopping section has included only listings from merchants who paid to be included in the results. In some cases, the order of the shopping results has been dictated by how much money Google received for the listing. The change coincides with what is expected to be the most lucrative holiday shopping season on the Web yet.

Google discloses that it receives payments in small print at the bottom of the shopping results page. The notice is also visible if a user clicks on a link at the top of the shopping results page, under the heading: "Why these products?"

What's left unsaid is the omission of sites such as Amazon, which often offers some of the best deals on the Web.

The financially driven system for determining the results in a major part of Google's search engine breaks new ground for a company whose idealistic founders, Page and Sergey Brin, once railed against the perils of allowing money to influence which Web links to show.

Brin and Page preached about the issue in academic papers that they wrote about search while conceiving Google as Stanford University graduate students. They also delved into the topic when discussing Google's "don't be evil" creed in a letter written when the company went public in 2004.

"Our search results are the best we know how to produce," Brin and Page wrote in the letter. "They are unbiased and objective, and we do not accept payment for them."

Microsoft contends that Google is doing a disservice to its users with the new approach, as many users may not even realize that the results in shopping search are being swayed by money.

"We want consumers to know in contrast to route that Google has pursued, we are staying true to the DNA of what a good search engine is really about," said Mike Nichols, Bing's chief marketing officer. "We will rank results on what's relevant to you and not based on how much someone might pay us."

Microsoft once accepted payments that can affect the order of results. But the Redmond, Wash., company said it hasn't accepted payments since it re-branded its search engine as Bing in 2009.

Bing's shopping section includes merchant listings for Shopping.com, a service that gets referral fees. Microsoft said the payments don't influence how Bing ranks its shopping results.

Negotiation Style ? Commitment Matters

Earlier this week, I was reminded of a survey that IACCM undertook a few years ago exploring member attitudes to negotiation style. One of the key discoveries was that almost half were not even aware of the ?positional? and ?principled? terms that were used in the seminal work on negotiation, ?Getting to Yes?.

The reason I re-discovered the study was because of a question from?three MBA students at the Norwegian School of Entrepreneurship, who are studying what frameworks business managers and negotiators use when planning or conducting negotiations.

On reflection, I had to admit that I don?t spend much time thinking about these questions of style, because I?believe most b2b negotiations tend to be a hybrid. Also,?a discussion of preferred style seems to imply far more planning by the average negotiator than is really the case. In my experience, they are more often driven by the broader policies and practices of the organization than by any personal propensity for negotiating style. So, for example, if the company operates with strong ?powers reserved? by specific functions, the style is largely one of stone-walling.

Many large businesses?appear driven more by concepts such as avoidance, assertion or compromise. Value trading tends to be eliminated because of management and measurement systems.
Also, we have to bear in mind the fundamental shifts that there have been in business operations in the last 15 years, none of which?are adequately?reflected in current literature. Specifically, the globalization of trading relationships and the intervention of networked technologies have fundamentally changed the framework for negotiation. Things like e-auctions have altered the playing field for negotiability; communication technologies and distance have made most negotiations virtual; the growth of specialisms has rendered negotiation far more defensive and iterative (rather than holistic); and procurement practices have eroded trust and loyalty between trading partners. In addition, ERP systems have created a set of enterprise standards that create complexity for one or both sides ? the challenge of ?what happens when ERP meets ERP?.

Overall, the nature and scale of complexity that faces negotiators today means that the rationality implied by concepts such as ?positional and principled? just doesn?t exist. Even if I want to be collaborative and open, the barriers to achieving it are often simply too great. In either preparing for, or observing during, a business-to-business negotiation, I have to understand not only the personal character of the various negotiators, but also the measurements that motivate them and the ?organizational culture? that will eventually affect not only this negotiation, but also the subsequent performance of the contract. It is a complicated mix ? and rather defies the theories of specific style.

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

ECONOMIST VIEWS

ROB WOOD, BERENBERG BANK

"This is obviously good news that the economy grew in Q3, but the underlying picture is that UK growth remains fragile. The good news from the third quarter is unlikely to last with the one-off boost from the Olympics unwinding in the fourth quarter and business surveys downbeat, a return to contraction is likely, bringing with it talk of a triple-dip."

Virtualization Meets Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing and Virtualization are amongst the hottest topics in IT.

We see growing demand for Cloud and Virtualization training courses but there is often confusion between the two.

This confusion is very understandable as the latest generation of fully virtualized datacentres become a core component of both internal and external Cloud environments.?

So let?s go back to basics.

What is Vitualization?
Virtualization refers to the operation of one computer to do the job of multiple computers by sharing its resources across multiple environments. Virtual servers and virtual desktops allow you to host multiple operating systems and multiple applications locally and in remote locations.

A virtual machine appears to be a physical computer but in reality is a set of files running applications from hardware which the user need not be aware of.

Virtualization was used decades ago on some early computers as a way to increase utilisation. This remains the major benefit.? It was applied to x86 servers from 2003 and has grown at a phenomenal rate since then. The market leading technology has been from VMware.

What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is a style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service using network technologies.

Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

The most compelling benefits of the cloud aren?t just cost savings. They?re the increased flexibility to optimize efficiency and best serve the needs of the business

The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that?s often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams.

How are Virtualization and Cloud Computing linked?
A virtual machine may be free-standing with no network connection. This was the early manifestation of virtualization where the objective was simply to increase the utilisation of a given server.

Cloud computing can be delivered without virtualization ? using fully discrete servers.

However, in reality, the ?supply side? benefits of virtualization and the ?demand side? benefits of cloud computing? are developing hand in glove. Virtualization has become a key enabler for both Private and Public Cloud services since it provides the flexible use of hardware (and software) to efficiently deliver on demand services to multiple diverse users.

The basics of Virtualization and Cloud in 2 minutes 22 seconds!

How is Virtualization Evolving?
The vision of virtualization described by Gary Chen in an IDC paper for IBM is of a Fully Virtualized Datacenter?. He sees this dynamic datacenter as the end game as we progressively apply virtualisation to servers, storage, and networking.

?Server virtualization is a catalyst that will drive change into every part of the datacenter. Cloud, a natural extension of virtualization, also brings a completely new delivery and service model. Together, both technologies offer disruptive new benefits, but they also will impact every aspect of IT.??

?

virtualization and cloud

VMware technologies are driving in this direction. Building on the foundation of vSphere virtualization, VMware vCloud Suite abstracts, pools, and automates all IT services to deliver an elastic, easily managed Software-Defined Datacenter.

What Virtualization Training Courses are Available?
It is a challenge for IT professionals to keep up to speed with fast evolving virtualization technologies. The technology is still dominated by VMware so courses such as VMware Sphere Install, Configure, Manage remain the most popular.

However, as the scope of virtualization extends so the impact on other technologies and topics increases. At Focus we have recently launched a new zone which brings together our growing portfolio of virtualization courses. This includes Red Hat and Microsoft Virtualization courses.

Homo (Sans) Sapiens: Is Dumb and Dumber Our Evolutionary Destiny?

James R. Flynn?s observation that IQ scores experienced dramatic gains from generation to generation throughout the 20th century has been cited so often, even in popular media, that it is becoming a cocktail party talking point. Next stop a New Yorker cartoon. (An article about Flynn and the Flynn effect has already been published in The New Yorker.)

A recent report in Trends in Genetics (part 1 and part 2) takes a bleaker view of our cognitive future?one that foresees the trend line proceeding inexorably downward. Gerald Crabtree, a biologist at Stanford University, has put forward a provocative hypothesis that our cushy modern existence?absent the ceaseless pressures of natural selection experienced during the Paleolithic?makes us susceptible to the slow creep of random genetic mutations in the the 2000 to 3000 genes needed to ensure that our intellectual and emotional makeup remains intact. The implications of this argument are that we as a species of the genus Homo are over many generations slowly losing our sapiens.

The press justifiably had a field day with this one:

Why did Petraeus do it? Maybe humans are evolving to be dumber.

We?re getting, like, dumber

Homo ??? ?? ??? sapiens

The really clever part of Crabtree?s argument rests on the contention that a Stone Age Fred Flintstone may have been more of a dynamo in some ways than a 20th century Albert Einstein?our pre-historic forebears performed? the evolutionary heavy lifting that led to the swollen heads that we still avail ourselves of, at least until the inevitable decline predicted by Crabtree sets in.

Expansion of the human frontal cortex and endocranial volume, to which we likely owe our capacity for abstract thought, predominately occurred between 50 000 and 500,000 years ago in our prehistoric African ancestors, well before written language and before we had the modern voice-box to produce sophisticated verbal language, but after the first tools. Thus, the selective pressures that gave us our mental characteristics operated among nonverbal hunter-gatherers living in dispersed bands or villages, nothing like our present-day high-density, supportive societies.

In line with Crabtree?s take, the transition to survival through wiles?in place of speed and physical strength?required adaptations that appeared to rival or outpace the most lofty contemporary intellectual achievements like writing a symphony or cogitating on higher math. One small error in gauging the aerodynamics and gyroscopic stabilization of a spear and one of our would-be ancestors became a canape for a saber-tooth tiger.

Many kinds of modern refined intellectual activity (by which our children are judged) may not necessarily require more innovation, synthesis, or creativity than more ancient forms: inventing the bow-and-arrow, which seems to have occurred only once about 40,000 years ago, was probably as complex an intellectual task as inventing language. Selection could easily have operated on common (but computationally complex) tasks such as building a shelter, and then computationally simple tasks, such as playing chess, became possible as a collateral effect.

Flintstone vs. Einstein smarts are contrasted most starkly by looking at the case of artificial intelligence. AI has achieved major strides in emulating certain aspects of intellect: playing chess or Jeopardy and finding patterns in large collections of data, a field dubbed ?deep learning.? But the remaining and still immense challenges AI confronts lie elsewhere, as Crabtree, points out:

AI promised household robots that would wash dishes, mow the lawn, and bring us freshly cooked croissants and coffee in the morning. Needless to say we do not have these robots now and none of the readers of this piece will probably ever see them, despite the immense financial impetus to build them.

The things at which AI excels?playing chess, Jeopardy or keeping an airplane on course?are, in fact, a cognitive piece of cake compared to washing dishes and putting them away in the right place. I remember roboticist Rodney Brooks demonstrating this during a talk at MIT in which he simply put his hand in his pocket and pulled out some change, an extraordinarily tough task for the current generation of R2-D2s.

Without the rigors of strong selection in our extended urban conglomerates?no more necessity of getting it right the first time on that spear throw?the slow but relentless decline of those 2,000 to 5,000 cognition-related genes has already begun?as this argument goes. Crabtree begins the first part of? his essay by asserting that the average citizen from Athens circa 1,000 B.C.?or anyone from Africa, India, Asia or the Americas millenia back?would be among the ?brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions, with a good memory, a broad range of ideas, and a clear-sighted view of important issues??personal qualities supplemented by an astonishing emotional aplomb. This hyper-fit type would have prevailed even before the rise of civilization:

A hunter?gatherer who did not correctly conceive a solution to providing food or shelter probably died, along with his/her progeny, whereas a modern Wall Street executive that made a similar conceptual mistake would receive a substantial bonus and be a more attractive mate. Clearly, extreme selection is a thing of the past.

Maybe this explains our fascination with post-apocalyptic Mad Max-style fantasies?? But where?s the proof for Crabtree?s musings and what about contradictory evidence?? Crabtree proposes a test of his hypothesis and he also dismisses the Flynn effect that suggests that we have been getting progressively smarter generation after generation. Better IQ scores, Crabtree posits, are not a result of natural selection, but rather may have resulted from getting rid of lead and other heavy metals from gasoline and paint, from elimination of hypothyroidism by putting iodine in salt and from learning how to take tests better. Notwithstanding the Flynn effect, our slow genetic decline continues apace.

And what does the author of the Flynn effect? think about the Crabtree effect?

Crabtree suggests?that our genetic IQ is in?decline and proposes a direct genetic test of his hypothesis. We should await the results without ?sharing his pessimism. ? As he says, the environment that pressures us to perform intellectually is competition with other people, which could be argued to be at its maximum today. He ?fears? it is not enough and that is not a solid foundation foundation for his speculations. ?A much more direct test of trends is reproductive patterns. ?Only recently have the better educated been out-reproduced by the less educated. ?One can imagine events that would reverse this, so it is premature to panic.

Meanwhile, noted British anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar questions the premises of any postulated slow slide toward imbecility:

Crabtree?s argument is built on the assumption that the selection pressure for big brains (aka IQ) was solving instrumental problems (how to survive in the world by building better weapons, better tools, etc). In fact, the selection for larger brains across all mammals and birds (and specifically primates) is the complexities of the social world, and this remains at least as complex as it ever was ? in fact, the social world may have even become more complex than it ever was due to a combination of higher population density and urbanization. The ability to build clever tools or novel hunting techniques appears to be a by-product of the [neural] software needed to handle a complex world (they both use the same logic and cognitive processes). So we haven?t in fact lost the selection process that kept the pressure on.

The question, as often happens in evolutionary biology, is how to distinguish assertions like Crabtree?s from a Rudyard Kipling ?just so? story. Crabtree has thought of a test that would sequence whole genomes of carefully selected individuals?ones whose genes could be traced back through an involved analysis to ancestors who lived at different times during the past 5,000 years when the transition from hunter-gatherer lifestyle to agriculture was taking place. The test would look for an increase in mutations for those individuals with genes linked to ancestors who lived more recently along the 5000-year continuum, a confirmation of the gradual decline in intellectual ability.

Finding these people might require more than posting notices on Twitter and Facebook and Crabtree?s? proposal is probably not going to get pegged high on the NIH?s funding priorities for the 2014 federal fiscal year. But the Stanford professor still does not despair. He ends this entropic projection of our evolutionary future on an optimistic and self-deprecatory note. Science, he says, may yet find a way to counteract this trend. ?One does not need to imagine a day when we could no longer comprehend the problem, or counteract the slow decay in the genes underlying our intellectual fitness, or have visions of the world population docilely watching reruns on televisions they can no longer build.?

We may still have a few hundred years before we lose the modifier denoting ?intelligent? in Homo sapiens and science may yet find a way to save us ?by socially and morally acceptable means. In the meantime [Crabtree volunteers], I?m going to have another beer and watch my favorite rerun of Miami CSI (if I can figure out how to work the remote control).?

Russian Newspaper: Obama Was Re-Elected by ?Illiterate Society ...

48555

Russian news Pravda?s Xavier Lerma said that with the re-election of Barack Obama, ?The Communists have won in America,? but he goes onto say that they failed miserably in Russia as Vladimir Putin was re-elected as President. Lerma writes the with the election of Putin the New World Order is kept out of Russia, while ?America continues to repeat the Soviet mistake.?

During Obama?s first term in office Vladimir Putin was the Prime Minister of Russia and had given a speech in 2009 about avoiding the Soviet mistake of militarization. He said with regards to the economy and a huge military build up, ??instead of solving the problem, militarization pushes it to a deeper level. It draws away from the economy immense financial and material resources, which could have been used much more efficiently elsewhere.? Apparently no one was listening.

Additionally Lerma went on to say that Obama was re-elected to a second term by ?an illiterate society.? He pointed out the lies that Obama engages in as he talks of lower taxes while raising them and gives speeches about love and peace in the world while promoting wars. I can?t say that I disagree with him on this.

Italy votes in center-left primary amid recession

ROME (AP) ? Italians voted in a primary for a center-left candidate to run in spring general elections that will in large part determine how Italy's tries to fix its troubled finances and emerge from a grinding recession.

Exit polls and preliminary results cited late Sunday by Italian media indicated that none of the five candidates won a 50 percent majority, meaning a runoff will be held Dec. 2 between the top two finishers: Pier Luigi Bersani, the 61-year-old leader of the main center-left Democratic Party, and Matteo Renzi, the 37-year-old mayor of Florence.

Some analysts had predicted a low turnout, thanks to a series of party finance scandals that have soured Italians on their political class. But some voting stations stayed open well beyond the official closing time to allow everyone on line to cast their ballots, the ANSA news agency reported.

While the candidates have been gamely campaigning and debating one another ahead of the primary, Sunday's vote has largely been overshadowed by speculation about the political ambitions of Italy's current premier, Mario Monti, and whether ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi will run for office for a fourth term.

Berlusconi again threw a wrench in the primary plans of his center-right People of Freedom party by hinting Saturday that he was "thinking" about returning to politics. Berlusconi has flip-flopped several times on the question in recent weeks, complicating efforts by his party secretary, Angelino Alfano, to rally support behind a party that has been tainted by the finance scandals in recent months.

"If Berlusconi really does return to the field as he has said, I have to ask myself what's the point of having a primary, which only has sense if he doesn't run," Alfano said. "Otherwise we have to rethink everything."

Berlusconi resigned as premier last year amid personal sex scandals and legal woes, unable to convince international markets that he could balance Italy's budget and pass necessary financial reforms to save Italy from a Greek-style debt crisis. Italy's president tapped Monti, a respected economist and former European commissioner, to head a government of technocrats to guide Italy until general elections.

Monti's government has imposed a painful austerity program and pushed through structural reforms that together have succeeded in bringing down Italy's borrowing costs. While ordinary Italians have chafed at the reforms, the positive market reaction to Monti's stewardship has fueled support for a second term, particularly among centrist politicians and some of Italy's business elite.

Monti has ruled out running for premier but has left the door open for a second term if no party wins a clear majority and he is tapped to head another government.

"I will reflect on all the possibilities ? none excluded ? in which I could possibly be able to contribute to the best interests of Italy and Europe," Monti said on a primetime talk show on RAI state television Sunday.

President Giorgio Napolitano made clear last week that Monti couldn't run for office heading a party ticket, since he's currently a senator-for-life. Newspaper analysts suggested Napolitano's aim in keeping Monti out of the campaign, on a potentially unelectable centrist ticket, was to ensure he remained a viable alternative for premier if neither of Italy's main parties wins a clear majority ? or to be named his successor as president.

Fetal alcohol exposure affects brain structure in children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Children exposed to alcohol during fetal development exhibit changes in brain structure and metabolism that are visible using various imaging techniques, according to a new study being presented November 25 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Alcohol use by expectant mothers can lead to problems with the mental and physical development of their children -- a condition known as fetal alcohol syndrome. Research suggests an incidence of 0.2 to 1.5 per 1,000 live births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Costs for care of individuals affected by fetal alcohol syndrome in the U.S. have been estimated at $4 billion annually.

Advancements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are affording unprecedented insights into the effects of alcohol on the central nervous systems of children whose mothers drank alcohol during their pregnancy. Recently, researchers in Poland used three different MRI techniques to better define these effects.

The study group included 200 children who were exposed to alcohol during their fetal stage and 30 children whose mothers did not drink while pregnant or during lactation. Researchers used MRI to evaluate the size and shape of the corpus callosum, the bundle of nerve fibers that forms the major communication link between the right and left halves of the brain, in the two groups. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the major cause of impaired development or complete absence of the corpus callosum.

The MRI results showed statistically significant thinning of the corpus callosum in the children exposed to alcohol compared with the other group.

"These changes are strongly associated with psychological problems in children," said Andrzej Urbanik, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

Dr. Urbanik and colleagues also used diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) to study six areas of the central nervous system in the children. DWI maps the diffusion process of water and can be a more sensitive means than traditional MRI for detecting tissue abnormalities.

Children in the alcohol group exhibited statistically significant increases in diffusion on DWI compared with the other children.

"The increase of diffusion indicates neurological disorders or damage to the brain tissue," Dr. Urbanik said.

To noninvasively study metabolism in the brains of the children, the researchers used proton (hydrogen) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HMRS), a common adjunct to structural MRI studies. HMRS results showed a complex collection of metabolic changes.

"In individual cases, we found a high degree of metabolic changes that were specific for particular locations within the brain," Dr. Urbanik said.

Beyond the antique bookcases ? a look at life inside Britain's ...

It?s bigger and grander than Buckingham Palace, but there?s more to Blenheim than Boulle antique marquetry furniture , as a new Channel 4 series revealed on Thursday night.

The birthplace of Winston Churchill, with 187 rooms stuffed with antique chests and other treasures, Blenheim is arguably Britain?s finest stately home, receiving around half a million visitors each year. It is also the only palace in the UK not occupied by a bishop or royalty, having been the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough since 1704. The first Duke almost lost the house after a fall-out with Queen Anne, but the family managed to keep hold of it and the ?Battle of Blenheim? was won when John ?Sunny? Spencer-Churchill, the 11th Duke and present incumbent, made the home a tourist and events attraction.

In The Aristocrats (Channel 4, 22nd November at 8 pm) viewers in Cumbria saw the antique bookcases in a new light as the cameras focussed on the 11th Duke and his tumultuous relationship with his son Jamie, the infamous Marquess of Blandford. James Blandford?s hell-raising lifestyle led to his father disowning him in 1994, the inheritance passing instead to his younger half-brother, Edward. However, following a period of redemption and reconciliation both his inheritance and title were restored.

The Aristocrats is proof that inheriting a stately home is more about work and responsibility than privilege and wealth. In Lancashire, the Victorian balloon back dining chair seen in an antique dealer?s window may well have come from some historic family seat, long since reduced to rubble.

how to find a good article writer who has basic qualities of writing ...

Actually it is not a hard task to find out a good writer. As there are many eminent writers around the world who entertain their readers widely. But presently, I am talking about such a writer who can very easily make understand a subject to his readers and touch their hearts just after a click on .com.

So, it is better to discuss about a writer/company who can provide us affordable article writing services and in this connection the first and foremost qualities of a writer are being discussed at the bottom.

  • The subject matter of the writer should be clear and logical.

Difficult and complex subject matter often proved uninteresting to the readers and it becomes problematic to constitute acceptable logics. On the other hand, vivid and simple logical writing often wins high acclaim.

  • The writings should contain simple vocabulary.

Silly grammatical mistakes divert the focus of the readers and doubt to the knowledge and ability of the writer. Regular following of a good grammar book might be the best remedy.

  • For more fluency, writers should keep his eyes open to know the recent facts, discoveries and inventions.

A good writer should have the habit of reading books, magazines and news papers. This regular habit may strengthen a writer?s stock of words.

  • The subject matter may be common but must be interesting.

It is often seen that though the subject matter or the theme of the writing is very interesting, yet the writer cannot gain honor only for his inefficiency and lack of skill.

  • Presentation should be good, well organized and concise.

A good and powerful writing also can stumble just for the lack of well organized presentation.? A common theme with attractive and lively presentation becomes popular as a new and attractive bottle with old wine becomes costlier.

  • Opening paragraph should unlock the subject matter of the writing. Otherwise, unknowingly elaborate description can kill the interest of readers.

Our honorable readers can afford themselves a little time for reading or browsing. If they cannot find the key sentence in the very first paragraph, they lose their interest to go through further.

A writer should also keep in his mind that simple, conversational style and plain English is highly accepted. Proverbs, idioms and rhetorical expression may trouble the readers. Meaningless repetition of a point in writing proves a writers inability to write well.

Lastly, personal problems should not be imposed on readers. A writer should be a clear mirror of his readers. Style of writer should be his own and is to be acquired through wide reading and learning.

Thai anti-government protesters clash with police

BANGKOK (AP) ? Protesters calling for Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down rallied in the heart of Bangkok on Saturday, clashing with police in the first major demonstration against the government since it came to power last year.

Although the rally site itself was peaceful, protesters on a nearby street tried and failed to break through a concrete police barricade, at one point ramming a truck into it. Both demonstrators and riot police lobbed tear gas canisters at each other.

Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Utayo said five officers were injured in the skirmishes, two of them seriously. He said 130 demonstrators were detained, some of them carrying knives and bullets.

The demonstration underscores the simmering political divisions that have split the country since the army toppled Yingluck's brother Thaksin Shinawatra in a 2006 military coup, a move that triggered years of instability.

Saturday's rally was organized by a royalist group calling itself "Pitak Siam" ? or "Protect Thailand." Led by retired army Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, the group accuses Yingluck's administration of corruption, ignoring insults to the revered monarchy and being a puppet of Thaksin.

Yingluck has taken the threats seriously, and accused demonstrators of seeking to overthrow her government, which came to power in mid-2011 after winning a landslide election. Earlier in the week, Yingluck ordered nearly 17,000 police deployed ahead of Saturday's rally and invoked a special security law, citing concerns it could turn violent.

Protest organizers had spoken of mobilizing hundreds of thousands of supporters. But by Saturday afternoon, only around 10,000 had turned up.

Speaking from the rally's central stage on Saturday, Boonlert vowed the demonstration would remain peaceful. But he said: "I promise that Pitak Siam will succeed in driving this government out."

He then led the crowd in a chant: "Yingluck, get out! Yingluck, get out!"

The rally was held at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a public space near Parliament that has been used by protesters in the past.

Police allowed protesters into the site, and two roads leading to it were open. But in an effort to control access, they blocked roads on another street leading to Royal Plaza.

Protesters tried to break through the barriers in the morning, cutting through rings of barbed wire. They clashed with police in the area at least twice on Saturday.

While Pitak Siam is a newcomer to Thailand's protest scene, it is linked to the well-known "Yellow Shirt" protesters, whose rallies led to Thaksin's overthrow. The same movement later toppled a Thaksin-allied elected government after occupying and shutting down Bangkok's two airports for a week in 2008.

Thaksin remains an intensively divisive figure in Thai politics. The Yellow Shirts and their allies say he is corrupt and accuse him of seeking to undermine the popular constitutional monarch ? charges Thaksin denies.

On Thursday, Yingluck's Cabinet invoked an Internal Security Act in three Bangkok districts around the protest site. The act allows authorities to close roads, impose curfews and ban use of electronic devices in designated areas.

Since then, police have closed roads around Yingluck's office and Government House, and boosted security at the homes of senior officials, including the prime minister.

In a nationally televised address explaining the move, Yingluck had said protest leaders "seek to overthrow an elected government and democratic rule ... and there is evidence that violence may be used to achieve those ends."

Analysts said they did not view the protest as an immediate threat to Yingluck's government, but were watching it closely.

"Anytime you have tens of thousands of people converging, assembling in a central Bangkok location, it becomes a government stability concern," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.

But he added: "I think it's a serious concern more than a serious threat."

Boonlert, the protest group's leader, is best known for his role as president of the Thailand Boxing Association. His name is unfamiliar in the anti-Thaksin protest movement, but his message appears to have resonated with Yellow Shirt supporters who have laid low in recent years after Yingluck's party won the last elections.

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability since 2006, with Thaksin's supporters and opponents taking turns to spar over who has the right to rule the country.

The most violent episode came in 2010, when Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters led a two-month occupation of central Bangkok to demand the resignation of an anti-Thaksin government. The protests sparked a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008, when he jumped bail to evade a corruption conviction and two-year jail term. He retains huge popularity among the rural poor, who want to see him pardoned and returned to power. But he is reviled by the urban elite and educated middle class, who see him as authoritarian and a threat to the monarchy.

Buoyed by Thaksin's political machine, Yingluck was elected by a landslide victory in August 2011. She initially was criticized for her lack of political experience ? she was an executive in Shinawatra family businesses ? but has won praise for leading the country through one of its longest peaceful periods in recent years.

Former UFC fighter loses his house to fire on Thanksgiving

Former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman lost his home to a fire on Thanksgiving. The lightweight who has been fighting since 1996 shared the sad news on his Facebook page.

Sad thanks giving for me and my family. My house burned down early this AM. Thank God no one was hurt and I have that to be thankful for. Something like this makes my recent direction change all the harder...the one person that could make me feel okay about everything is no longer here. When God wants you to have a fresh start sometimes he really wants to make his point clear.

He and his family were unhurt, but a report on a fire at Hallman's address said it amounts to more than $180,000 in damage. The first floor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.

[Also: GSP returns to MMA rankings]

It's been a rough stretch for the 36-year-old fighter. He blew weight for his UFC on FX 5 bout with Thiago Tavares. The bout was canceled after Hallman said he was not fit to fight and dealing with personal issues. He was then cut from the UFC.

Thank you, Fighter's Only.

Successful Selectivity by Warren Bevan

Heading into this Thanksgiving week we should see much less volume coming in, especially Wednesday on with markets closed Thursday and only partially open for a few hours Friday.

?

Thanksgiving week is one of the quietest weeks of the year and a great time to use the quiet time for study, reflection and planning for the time to come. And of course, gorge on Turkey and all the fixings with family and friends.

?

This year may be a little different though since it looks very much like we?ve put a low in Friday for markets and many leading stocks.

?

As for gold and silver, they had a decent week in terms of hanging onto life by a thread!

?

The mining indices are crashing along with many mining stocks and they are leading gold and silver by a few days so I?d have to come to the conclusion that gold and silver investors aren?t going to be so thankful this Thanksgiving week.

?

As much as I love gold and silver and think they are the go to investment, there are still many other trades to ply when investing and they pay much better than simply sitting in gold and silver.

?

Not that I?ve change my view.

?

I still hold a very high percentage in physical gold and silver and don?t see that changing anytime soon but that percentage is shrinking fast as cash is built up trading other vehicles.

?

I wouldn't mind a couple hundred dollar off sale in gold in fact and I?d be adding to my positions on such a move if it is to come.

?

Let?s get into the precious metals charts and see whats going on. I?ll show a few more charts than usual today, and write less.

?

I like to keep the fluff down and keep the meat level high for subscribers.

?

?

Metals review

?

Gold fell 0.99% this past week which isn?t bad considering how many others fared. The little pattern it?s got, kind of a reverse head and shoulders, is often good for higher prices but this time I don't think so.

?

Volume is accelerating as gold falls and there are other major factors which are telling me gold is going to fall harder, soon. I?ll get into them a bit later.

?

I?m looking at $1,680 as the first level of support, then $1,640.

?

I hope I?m wrong, but I really don?t think so. If you?re looking for an early Christmas gift of physical gold or silver I?d hang off as they should be soon on sale.

?

?

Silver slipped 0.55% on the week and also has a kind of mini reverse head and shoulders pattern that is also looking set to fail. Next stop, or support area is at $31 with both horizontal support as well as the 200 and 100 day moving averages there.

?

If $31 falls then there really isn?t much support until $29, but $28 is much better support.

?

We can fall fast as I?m sure you?re aware so be careful here if you?re long on a trading basis.

?

?

Platinum was pretty well flat having risen 0.39% this past week.

?

Platinum has a well defined bear flag pattern here which point to lower prices. The measured move is some $200 lower but let?s focus on the first support level for today.

?

$1,500 should act as a bit of support, but to be honest it?s not looking good here for platinum unfortunately.

?

?

palladium tried to break out of this bear flag on the upside and also above it?s 200 and 50 day moving averages but it failed. That is always a sign of trouble to come.

?

Now palladium is trying to get below it?s 21 and 100 day moving averages and move to the lower end of it?s bear flag. If the flag breaks then $570 will be seen in short order.

?

The high volume on the breakout failure certainly points to lower prices.

?

Let?s take a quick look at a few tip-offs we had and have that the precious metals are heading lower.

?

?

I?ve been really impressed with the pattern in most mining indices lately but seeing the large base fail was the sign that gold and silver are heading lower.

?

It's definitely tax loss selling season now in full force and I?d have to expect it to get worse before it gets better.

?

?

The smaller mining company ETF has the exact same pattern and almost guarantees gold and silver are going to follow it lower.

?

Yes it sucks.

?

I?ve been a long suffering mining share investor for longer than I care to remember some days but luckily it still remains a small portions of my total investments.

?

I see it as gambling almost and let them ride for the most part but I definitely have thoughts of just getting out altogether with a few exceptions.

?

Even those few favorite companies of mine who are performing very well are signalling lower prices to come and have fallen very quickly as of late.

?

I wonder if we?ll ever have our day in the mining shares sometimes.

?

?

The SIL ETF had the best base of all the mining indices but nothing is ever certain and if you can?t accept reality and take a loss quickly, I guarantee it will get much larger.

?

These and the other mining ETF?s and indices falling hard and before gold and silver is no fun, but if you?re quick you can certainly take advantage of the coming gold and silver move lower.

?

Have a great weekend and week ahead and if I?m not in touch next weekend please have yourself a fantastic few days off with family and friends.

?

They are what really make life so special.
