What is Vitualization?

What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is a style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service using network technologies.

Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that?s often used to represent the Internet in flowcharts and diagrams.

How are Virtualization and Cloud Computing linked?
A virtual machine may be free-standing with no network connection. This was the early manifestation of virtualization where the objective was simply to increase the utilisation of a given server.

Cloud computing can be delivered without virtualization ? using fully discrete servers.

However, in reality, the ?supply side? benefits of virtualization and the ?demand side? benefits of cloud computing? are developing hand in glove. Virtualization has become a key enabler for both Private and Public Cloud services since it provides the flexible use of hardware (and software) to efficiently deliver on demand services to multiple diverse users.

How is Virtualization Evolving?
The vision of virtualization described by Gary Chen in an IDC paper for IBM is of a Fully Virtualized Datacenter?. He sees this dynamic datacenter as the end game as we progressively apply virtualisation to servers, storage, and networking.

?Server virtualization is a catalyst that will drive change into every part of the datacenter. Cloud, a natural extension of virtualization, also brings a completely new delivery and service model. Together, both technologies offer disruptive new benefits, but they also will impact every aspect of IT.??
