Ky. middle school teacher using Twitter in classroom

Posted Dec. 28, 2011 at 6:07 a.m.

A Maysville middle school teacher is using Twitter as a study tool.

Ella Bowling told The Ledger Independent that most of her science students at Mason County Middle School already use Twitter or other social networking sites, so she decided to incorporate it into her lessons.

Bowling says she's been discouraged from using social media in the classroom, but decided, "If you can't beat them, join them."

"Students are going to use social media, so why not find a way to get them to use it for an educational purpose," she said in an email to colleagues.

Bowling decided her first use of Twitter in the classroom would be to help students review for a unit test. She says about 40 students participated on Dec. 14, and the average test score was 87 percent.

"The kids had to answer the questions," she said. "They loved it. They thought it was the best thing ever for a review."

She says she was "pretty pleased" with the outcome and has continued tweeting vocabulary words and instructional videos over Christmas break.

She said she plans to use Twitter even more when classes resume in January, including having students tweet about things they are doing in class.
