Bill Harp, Almond Board of California board chairman and almond grower, says plenty of optimism exists for the future of the California almond industry.
California almond leaders predict a bullish future for the state?s largest tree-nut industry, valued at more than $3.8 billion in 2011.
During annual reports at the 2012 Almond Industry Conference in December, Richard Waycott and Bill Harp outlined the industry?s positive future to the rousing crowd of 2,400 almond industry enthusiasts.
?There is no doubt that we need to continue investing in production in order to satisfy the world?s desire to consume more California almonds,? said Waycott during the 40th annual event, held in Sacramento, Calif.
Waycott serves as the Almond Board of California?s (ABC) president and chief executive officer.
?We have once again had a remarkable year,? Waycott surmised. ?Almond production and shipments were outstanding in the fiscal year which ended July 2012.?
World demand for California almonds continues to increase.
The 2011 California almond harvest exceeded the 2-billion pound mark for the first time in history. Shipments grew by 14 percent topping out at 1.9 billion pounds. The 2012 crop year produced 5 percent to 10 percent fewer almonds, tied largely to weather. ?
California growers produce about 99 percent of the U.S. almond crop on about 760,000 bearing acres. In 2011, the almond industry ousted grapes as California?s second largest agricultural crop in value.
Dairy holds California?s top spot valued at about $7.6 billion, about double the value of almonds. ???
Bill Harp, first-year ABC board chairman, spoke as an industry leader and almond grower. Harp is the chief operating officer of The Faffri Group which grows about 10,000 acres of almonds, wine grapes, cotton, and other crops; mostly in the Bakersfield, Calif., area.
Almond grower prosperity, Harp says, is based on cost control, good yields, and fair prices. These factors combined with the positive direction from the ABC, he says, continue to lead the almond industry in the right direction.
Continuous improvements in crop production and market development are instrumental to continued growth.
?Continuous improvement is at the heart of our industry,? Harp said. ?By continuing to make improvements, we will guarantee a sustainable future.?
Average California almond yields have doubled over the last 20 years. Harp says cost containment and increased yields will help keep the industry strong. It all boils down to net grower returns.
?In order to ensure the orderly growth of our industry, we need to capture fair value.?
Waycott and Harp also discussed the new ABC global market roadmap implemented last year to direct the industry into the future. ?
?We believe we?ve taken major steps forward this year; even major leaps forward in several areas,? Waycott concluded.
The Almond Conference began in 1973, attended by 50 people. Over the years, the event was held in Sacramento, Fresno, and for the last 18 years in Modesto. ?
The conference moved back to Sacramento in December due to increased attendance and the need for additional space.

In a wide-ranging and interesting conversation Daniel Dennett reflects on hypocrisy and whether it may sometimes be optimal:
Suppose that we face some horrific, terrible enemy, another Hitler or something really, really bad, and here?s two different armies that we could use to defend ourselves. I?ll call them the Gold Army and the Silver Army; same numbers, same training, same weaponry. They?re all armored and armed as well as we can do. The difference is that the Gold Army has been convinced that God is on their side and this is the cause of righteousness, and it?s as simple as that. The Silver Army is entirely composed of economists. They?re all making side insurance bets and calculating the odds of everything.
Which army do you want on the front lines? It?s very hard to say you want the economists, but think of what that means. What you?re saying is we?ll just have to hoodwink all these young people into some false beliefs for their own protection and for ours. It?s extremely hypocritical. It is a message that I recoil from, the idea that we should indoctrinate our soldiers. In the same way that we inoculate them against diseases, we should inoculate them against the economists??or philosophers??sort of thinking, since it might lead to them to think: am I so sure this cause is just? Am I really prepared to risk my life to protect? Do I have enough faith in my commanders that they?re doing the right thing? What if I?m clever enough and thoughtful enough to figure out a better battle plan, and I realize that this is futile? Am I still going to throw myself into the trenches? It?s a dilemma that I don?t know what to do about, although I think we should confront it at least.
It would be astounding if there were never a situation in which a lie was effective in producing a good result, i.e. a noble lie. But is a rule of noble lies effective? In a long sequence of calls to war, how many have been just and wise and how many have been driven by vainglorious leaders and foolish pride?so which army do you want? I prefer the silver.
Note also that Dennett mixes narrow self interest and rationality in his description of ?economists.? But one can be fully rational without being narrowly self-interested. Dennett, for example, cheats a bit with his puzzle. The premise is some ?horrific, terrible enemy? but then later the economists ask ?am I so sure this cause is just?, to which the answer should be, given the premise, yes. In which case fighting is a rational response.

Apple Inc. has cut its orders for components for the iPhone 5 due to weaker-than-expected demand, people familiar with the situation said Monday.
Apple's orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter, for example, have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order, two of the people said.
The Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people.
Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month, the people said.

Microsofts answers to all of their iPad problems was the Surface, which was previously launched with Windows RT. The device runs on cellphone chips yet still looks very similar to the regular Windows 8 platform, which was supposed to help attract consumers. Sales of the Widows RT tablets haven?t been as strong and now Samsung is second guessing the platform as the reason why.
Samsung?s Senior Vice President, Mike Abary, recently said in an interview at CES that Samsung has decided they won?t launch their Windows RT tablet in the U.S. after discovering there isn?t as much demand for them. In his interview with CNET, Abary said the following:

The 42-story luxury high-rise in the Arts District is the building that?s gotten all those bad headlines recently about reflections off the mirrored glass.
?Partnering with Robbie Briggs and his Briggs Freeman Sotheby?s International Realty team is part of a natural transition that dramatically expands the capabilities of our in-house sales team as we enter the phase to generate the majority of our sales,? Steve Sandborg, vice president of sales and marketing for Museum Tower said.
